Latest in my design project of creating
monstrous humanoid/ gijinka cultists
based on the Zodiac animals, in the
same vein as my Pokémon Veiled Cults.
The subject is a female plant humanoid
with a large dress-like arrangement
of bright pink snapdragons, aiming a
wooden bow grasped by an overlapping
left hand to the right of frame. The
bowstring is being pulled back by a
vinelike arm extending from the back of
her head. Their head is covered entirely
by a flower petal mask that expands
out into two snapdragon flowers, while
their body is made primarily of a green
vinelike texture interspersed with a
wooden texture.
-Lore:
Snapdragons are an anomaly among Veiled Cultists, due in part to their totemic entity coming from the abstract identity of a Dragon rather than the soul of a slain creature. Some have speculated that Snapdragons are cultivated from the souls of an individual whose service to Mother Nature have been recognized by the Earth itself, granting new life to those who have died protecting it. While this can at times be the case, the Earth is more than capable of growing its own protectors should the need arise.
Spirits of nature can work through any vessel grown from the Earth, an ability that is often used to prey on the emotionally vulnerable to recruit them as Snapdragons. A favorite vessel of these spirits are the flowers left by widows at the graves of the departed; oftentimes, a nature spirit will speak through these offerings masquerading as the soul of the deceased loved one. Over enough visits, these nascent Snapdragons will become dependent on the nature spirit for emotional support, before either being convinced to join souls with the nature spirit in order to “join their loved one in life,” or being earnestly swayed to the spirit’s cause. An unwilling host will often be driven insane instantly by the stress of the spiritual merge, making an impulsive and deadly Snapdragon; however, a willing host will often keep their sanity and work hand-in-hand with their nature spirit, becoming a wise and vigilant guardian of verdure capable of commanding entire forests to defend from invaders.
Snapdragons' lower bodies are largely fluid in structure, as the vines that construct their form can entangle into different shapes. Legs can shift into a full tail, although the default form is a lower body that is more akin to a raptor, possessing two legs and a long, vinelike tail that they use for balance or as a sniping perch by standing upon it. The green and brown halves of a snapdragon's body are controlled separately by the two spirits in possession of the body, with the wisest of Snapdragons possessing the ability to split into two combatants and re-merge at will. Likewise, their bow can split into twin swords for this use.
