I remember a similar concept appearing in Mad Magazine. While his wife was preparing herself for their night out, the husband was reading (an article or book) about what primitive women did to make themselves more attractive -- wearing saved objects, applying various juices and such for color, wrapping themselves in hides, etc. At the end, the wife comments how she's glad she doesn't live like that -- after applying her various jewelry, makeups, and donning a fur stole.
