It doesn’t matter if the tree is alive or not these creatures will still on top and protect their home despite how much it does not protect them, with that said their crystal like body’s the temperature is not much of problem unless it’s very cold/hot but the wind in the other hand can easily take them off if it’s strong enough. Must creatures don’t want to risk attacking them for the bodies are tough and their whiskers are strong enough to crush many things.
