"Wassail your trees so they may bare, many a plum and many a pear!"
Senora and Peter welcome the new year with an ancient tradition. They were discovered by Hector tieing toast to trees and dumping spiced cider with wine and rum on the trees in the orchard.
"Is this a Christian or Pegan thing?" Hector asked
"That distinction has been rendered both unverifiable and irrelevant by the past thousand years," Senoria replied, grabbing the tree for stability.
"It's a symbolic thing," explained Peter, "a rejection of the materialistic to welcome the magical and traditional back into the world!"
"I thought this was done at Christmas," Hector stepped back to avoid being splashed with mulled wine.
" The point is to welcome the new year, you buzz kill!" Retorted Senora as she swatted at him with the Holly and mistletoe branches she was welding.
"Ouch! How much have you two had to drink?" Hector chuckled.
"This is the third pot we made today" Peter slurred before drinking from the crock pot directly.

I frequently am the one who cooks for my family and the growing obsession with 1500-1800 food and recipes is getting a mixed reception. Still bringing out foods from the past makes me feel connected to all the vanishing traditions of the past. I'll try and do better about posting this year after being quiet for most of 24.
Hey, you're prioritizing what's most important to you! It's always a treat to hear from you, but your loved ones are always first. And that's really awesome! Similarly, my mate and I have been cooking more foods from scratch. Our next big milestones are figuring out how to keep sourdough starter alive and maybe start a compost pile. Returning to older ways really is cathartic and grounding in a way, isn't it?
It really is. Chicken have been my favorite gardening project. I move the coup and turn the ground were it was, and that becomes the new year's garden plot. The soil in the back yard was mostly sand when we moved in but now it's rich and full of life. Gardening and cooking make that isolated feeling fade. You're working in nature and doing what people are meant to. If that makes sense.
