Who needs a wooden dragonhead on the prow of a longship when you've got the real thing? Even better, when you've got two of them?
So, the Algirics are a unique case. There's plenty of societies in which dragons and humans live side-by-side, but the Algirics differ in conceiving of themselves as a single culture comprised of two species.
...But there aren't any humans in this image because I don't know how to draw them (and the dragon couple needs some time together lol).
Anyway, the folk religion of the Algirics holds that there were once two divine tribes: The Gumir, gods of the humans; and Hengir, gods of the dragons. These two tribes were locked in a millennia-long conflict for dominance over creation, in which neither could emerge victorious. The war took a great toll on the mortal humans and dragons, as with their gods preoccupied by the war, they were left with no protection against the harsh and chaotic forces of nature.
That was until Algir, a deity who was simultaneously human and dragon, as well as male and female, took the mortal creations of the Gumir and Hengir under their protection. Algir taught these mortals how to survive, and frequently tricked the other gods through magic and deception to spare mortals from being caught up in the divine war. The mortals under their protection hence came to be known as the "Algirics".
After nine thousand years of war, Algir brought peace by slaying the unjust kings of the Gumir and Hengir in personal combat, and forcing the surviving gods to attend an assembly - the Reginsthing - to establish terms of peace. The Reginsthing elected Algir as the new king of both tribes, and the gods were henceforth united into a single pantheon.
