He chuckles and strokes your mind
Before nailing down your eyes.
There is no ending Grief—
There is no stopping Time.

But neither is there Hope
And the Ache to stay Alive
Who sits begging, pleading, gasping—Praying
Please—
“Survive—Survive!"

The will to survive is in all living things, a convenient attribute, propagated by it's own existence.

But what really makes something want to survive?
It's not like every bird or bug says to itself, "well, I gotta stay alive to help people understand the universe better." It's like the Will to Live (whether it stays there or not) is programmed into everything.
