A character from an abaondoned story idea, where there's a place where people with injured legs are transforming into centaurs, and the US army seeks to harnes it's power to turn crippled war veterans back into useful soldiers again. Only their plans aren't going quite to plan.
I just couldn't nail down a decent character arc or how to make it go wrong that felt right.

This is a great story idea!
I see a woman who wanted to join the military her whole life. She loves to run and the ability earns her a spot in an elite unit. She's on too of the world but loses her legs on her first mission. She wakes up a hospital to learn she'll never walk again. The military offers an experimental fix and she jumps at the chance. When she wakes a second time as a centaur she's initially horrified. Then she finds out she can run insanely fast. However her size quickly becomes a problem. She can't use human transportation or navigate stairs. On missions she's relegated to carrying packs or heavy weapons. The military eventually abandons the project and her, shipping her off to and equestrian farm where she becomes a famous vet thanks to her unique take on horse anatomy and eventually births a foal of her own.

I have family members who can't walk because of war
think it would be funny if the military experiments with exposing war vets that have leg issues end up being passivists and have some sort of weird bond with someone else (like horses do with their owner). honestly nothing has to be good or bad in a story, that's what slice of life is for.
maybe 2 or 3 dozen people in the military were exposed to this. Fun.
