And the last watercolor practice of this batch! My wolfy farmer oc :) This was the first one I did which I think you can kinda tell but it was where I figured some stuff out as I was working on it.

I think the biggest tell is the little white gaps between certain places like on his overall strap and shoulders which shows I wasnt super confident in laying down the colors right next to each other or too impatient to wait for the layers to dry completely
Another area is the splotchiness/lack of definition in the apples and the basket. Watercolors are kinda finicky if you try to paint layers while the paper is still kind of wet and I was kind of muddling around in those sections and getting impatient haha. I like crisp, well-defined sections in my watercolor painting so there was definitely a lot of bumbling around trying to figure out how to get that with this piece!

oh looking at it with no idea how water colors work i do think i see what you mean there, i didnt know ya had to let the paint dry and things to then kinda make layers like i do coloring for example digitally. er,
on my end i use a program and have layers i if i mess up i can start again from that one part
with painting and watercolors on paper would it mean you have to start completely over from scratch?

It depends on the paint and what you want it to look like, ultimately! Watercolors there is a very slim window where you can try to fix small things by blotting the wet paint from the paper so you can try painting on top of it again, but the fresh paint may not blend seamlessly in with the surrounding paint, and there’s only so many times you can do this before the moisture warps the paper. Since watercolors are transparent though, you can’t layer them on top of each other to fix a mistake.
Acrylics or oil paints are more opaque so sometimes you can paint over your mistakes but only after they are completely dry.
The convenience of layers in digital painting is really nice but I do kind of like the unpredictability of paints too and especially watercolors! It kind of forces you to detach from the pieces and just kind of see what happens haha

mm that haha that honestly sounds kinda wild but makes sense a bit i mean what about like canvas the instead of paper does it make a difference? and mm that last part, forces ya to detatch and just see what happens. dang, thats a reall good way to look at it ^^;
I guess like shading and things for me

Yeah! It makes a big difference especially with watercolor because the paint requires so much water to activate and to move the color around. You want to use pretty thick paper specifically made for watercolors because it’s designed to soak up the water without warping or getting wobbly- most other papers are too thin to use watercolors on without warping. It’s about the same with acrylic paints but there’s a like more flexibility there since acrylics don’t use as much water as watercolors.
Canvas is tough because it has a coat on it that makes it difficult for the water in watercolors to absorb, I’m not even sure if you can use watercolors on canvas properly because the cloth speaks up so much of her water that you don’t get the watercolor texture that makes this medium so unique (and imo appealing)

oh okay that first part really makes sense, i guess the paper would have to be thick enough to be able to. for sure. i didnt think about that. i mean there is acrylic and water color brushes on sai but i couldnt even imagine using the real thing.
and ah thats fair too water of course soaks up. uh. yeah i mean the only thing ive ever done even close was using black chalk in art class in high school to make a portrait of the johnyy depp version of sweeney tood. wish i still had it. i failed cause it took forever in class but finished it.
i have to ask. whats it like to just, sit there and mix colors together for real and paint like that? ^^;
oh edit! do you have relaxing music in the background when ya do?

I love mixing colors because it’s really satisfying when you get the color you want! Watercolors also require a pretty light touch so you don’t have to work too hard to get the shade you want if you’ve got a decent quality set m. There are some sets that have tons of colors but since I’m still just practicing right now I just got cheaper and more limited ones with basic colors loll. But yeah it’s fun mixing colors- it helps to understand color theory of course so you know what you’re doing, but once you get the hang of it it’s pretty easy to do imo!
Now that you mention it, I wasn’t really listening to anything while working on these watercolor pieces- I think the stimulation and multi tasking of working traditionally helps me stay focused. Sometimes when I do listen to music while working though it’s like Japanese indie music or sometimes kpop lollll.

ha on sai i just have to look at the color wheel thing or use a ref colors to use then try to get the darker versoion though one tutorital said to color everything in blue and change the opacity and erase with a huge erase not hard brush like the art trade i did with the cheetah. then the ahh its so much even digitally.
i will say for sure! when ive tried different things out like line shading giving a hue over the lines and colors etc before. etc it is so fun while sometimes frustrasting. to do. and yea big time i think maybe even the best artists might still be practicing ya know ^^; color theory i never learned much at all though
aaa oh nice! same funny enough i have a huge folder of lowfi, some that kinda just play for hours.
the lowfi girl on youtube i blame her xD
ah i cant say that was a joke there i did hear it from shows and things too ^^;
