Sarah's breath hitched as she locked eyes with the Thing that had stolen her girlfriend's body. It'd been months since the invasion had begun, but mere days since her girlfriend first contracted phyresis after one of them slashed her. They'd made it out, but her girlfriend was starting to change, and she left before Sarah could watch her deteriorate further.
Now, what used to be Jamie is slowly padding towards Sarah, it's gigantic body almost as tall as the trees as it approaches, squatting down until it meets Sarah's eyes, the tentacle grafted onto her lithe frame reaching out.
"Hon? It's still me. Please don't-"
Sarah didn't hear the rest, not wanting to hear as what stole her girlfriend talked in her voice, using her words. She was never going to escape, Jamie's massive figure catching up in a few short strides, the tentacle firmly wrapping around Sarah's arm.
"Please stop running, it's still me. I'm still me. I know I've changed, but please don't panic."
Sarah let herself breath. Even if it was lying, it wanted her alive for some reason, wanted her to relax. Sarah felt it's other, large hand reach behind her, pulling her into a hug against it's warm, steel body.
"That's it, I'm not gonna hurt you~"
Sarah felt herself lifted off the ground, feeling as "Jamie" cradled and kissed her. Cracks showed, Sarah let the tears flow as she let herself believe in what Jamie was telling her.
"There we go, no one could make me hurt you~"

it's a very captivating subset of the wider multiverse which makes it all the more heartbreaking the writers didn't know what the they were doing with it when the time came to have them become plot-relevant
I'd argue the only group that can come close to them is slivers for me which are a very different kind of critter, and haven't been an actual lore piece since before I was born lol

Exactly~! The closest I've seen in terms of techno-organic body horror is from DC with the cyborg zombies created by Brother Eye during the Future's End event, and those were just...really bad...
I don't know if you follow comics at all, but those designs were so unnecessarily edgy and over-the-top they looped right back around to being goofy.
In most cases, the cybernetic "enhancements" actually nerfed the heroes that received them, such as replacing Superman's legs with spider legs and one of his arms with a cannon, which happened to remove his ability to fly.

But getting back on the topic of New Phyrexia and March of the Machines, I hated elements about the story they did, but loved the designs of the world and the return to New Phyrexia to see the plane in all of its horrible beauty~<3
I just wish the event had gone on longer, and that the compleation of the planeswalkers had been handled a bit better.

agreed on all accounts. It really felt like they had no clue where to go after 'a single drop of oil can corrupt an entire plane' so they contrived a way to give the phyrexians a self destruct button rather than actually use some planted story bits like their weakness to Halo (not to mention how stupid 'invade literally all of reality' is just from a numbers perspective).
If I had my way, all the compleated walkers would've (at least physically) stayed phyrexian, and have at least a side story involving some coming to terms with their new forms and others seeking to undo it.
If nothing else, Nissa should've stayed bald at least for aftermath

Plus, it seemed like the only Planeswalkers that stayed dead after March of the Machines were the ones that Wizards couldn't come up with anything interesting anymore. Lukka and Tibalt just kept being secondary nuisances that were only around to fill the obligatory 3-Planeswalker quota each major booster set had to utilize. And one of those got compleated and didn't even get a fucking CARD representing it!
Precisely. I get that Phyrexia: All Will Be One was supposed to be the Avengers: Infinity War of the New Phyrexian Arc, the lowest point before the climactic finale, but it really should have been the end of Act 2 rather than the start of Act 3. They basically made the same mistakes they did in War of the Spark of cramming all of the big stuff into a single mega set, but this time with a small epilogue set.
Exactly. Like I've seen people make the argument that mirrodin already being a mostly metal plane was unusually susceptible, but even then I feel like the optimal 'invasion' strategy would've been to essentially just chuck a few buckets worth of oil in some forest nobody's gonna check until it's far too late, then close the portal, no mind control, no risk, just plant the seed on every plane they can.
I do hope we get to see new phyrexia again, and I'm personally of the hope that, since they've already contrived so much of their lore, Urabrask gets put back together somehow and is running the place lol.
