"Mom, these clothes make me feel so hot!"
"Easy, everflower, you're gonna need them when we go outside. The weather here is not like at home."
"But what weather needs these stupid jackets?"
The little Chtyruce boy sat in the shuttle seat, all packed in thick winter clothing. He was quite uncomfortable, never having worn such thick clothing. But his mother also had been dressing herself up with thick clothing as well. A third person, who was a completely different species than them, came sitting next to him; she was a Likaya, a four-legged canine-like species with large antlers. She leaned down towards the little boy.
"I guess you've never had a real winter on Modrin, Mi'oki," she said to him.
"What is a winter, Zakara?" the boy asked her.
"Winter is a season, a part of the year. Winter is a season where the daylight hours are short and the weather is cold."
"Bweugh! Is that why we have these stupid jackets?"
"Yes, you don't wanna freeze to death, do you?"
"But I don't like the cold!"
"Oh, this cold here is pretty tame. On Kaya the seasons are much more extreme. Our planet is tilted much more than Earth here. Places that have Nightless Days in summer have the Long Night in winter. Imagine that, seeing no daylight for galactic weks, or even half a galactic semester!"
"No day for half a gester? I'd go mad!"
"But where we go, we will have daylight, everflower," his mom said. "But it's still cold. -5 degrees Celcius."
"How cold is that, mom?"
"Well, water freezes at 0 degrees Celcius. And you're used to 20 degrees on the ship."
"So why are we going to a place that's so cold?"
"Oh, you'll see," Zakara said. "When water freezes, some funny stuff can happen..."
They feel the shuttle making a descent, and lightly touching down on the ground.
"We're here!" Zakara said. "Now, let me show you how winter really looks like..."
Zakara opened the shuttle door, and revealed a very white landscape surrounding them, reflecting the light from the winter sun. Some of the coniferous trees around them still managed to show their green needles from under the cover, and in the distance there was a frozen lake with several people ice skating on it. Mi'oki stepped outside, and got surprised by the cold blast he received from the outside air, and it quickly became clear why his clothing had to be this thick. But he was very fascinated by the white substance that was covering everything. He picked up a handful of, and found that it was quite soft, even though it was freezing cold.
"What is this stuff?" he asked.
"That's called snow," Zakara explained. "You don't have snow on Modrin, Kae?" she looked at his mother.
"Only high on the mountain tops, sometimes," Kae answered.
"But this snow feels so weird," Mi'oki asked. "It's like... really soft ice?"
"It is frozen water, yes," Zakara continued. "You see, when it's really cold, the water droplets in the sky start to freeze, and if this is slow enough, they form crystals. When these fall from the sky, it doesn't rain, but it... well... snows. And it covers the land just like this."
"Wow, so this is really cold rain? I didn't know it could be this pretty!"
"And you can have all kinds of fun with this. Look!"
Zakara crouched down, and formed with her hands some snow into a cube.
"It's quite mallealbe, see?"
"I've seen they make figures out of snow," Kae said. "Looks like it's a tradition here."
"Like that one?" Mi'oki pointed at a snowman up ahead.
"Yeah, like that."
"Hey, darling, should we make our own snow figure?" Zakara asked to Kae.
"Oh, yeah, I'd love to try it out!"
The two started to build the base of their own snow figure, when they heard Mi'oki shout:
"TORPEDO!"
They looked towards Mi'oki, who had decided to dive head-first into the snowman. He knocked the poor figure over, reducing it to a barely recogniseable pile of snow with him on top.
"MI'OKI!" Kae shouted. "People worked on that! You can't just destroy it like that!"
"I... I'm sorry mom," the boy stood up, hands behind his back, "I was just having some fun."
"Maybe you can build a new one," Zakara proposed. "Shouldn't take too long for you with four hands, right?"
"Bet I can get it done before you?" Mi'oki wanted to take up the challenge.
"Oh, I wanna see that! What about you, Kae?"
His mom nodded approvingly, and the boy went to work right away. After trying to build a base with his hands, he found out it was easier to roll the snow into a big ball, and stack those on top of one another. He gave the "head" a little snout, and found some branches and pebbles to decorate his figure, including four branches for the figure's arms. The boy looked satisfied at his work.
"That looks beautiful, everflower," his mom said, standing next to him. "Not bad for your first snowman."
"Thanks mom," Mi'oki said. He glance over at the snow figure his mom and Zakara were making, and Zakara had clearly turned it into a Likaya-snowman, including antlers and a "tauric" base. "Aw, yours looks so much better!"
"Oh, I've had plenty of practice when I was your age..." Zakara winked to him.
