This month is the 50th anniversary of my favorite lesser-known Rankin/Bass holiday special: "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." (The actual date was earlier in the month, but I was occupied with something else then.) You know, the special based on Clement Moore's classic poem with the mouse family and the town hall clock tower set up to lure Santa Claus to their town. It aired on CBS for 20 years, still pulling in strong ratings over that time, before being sent to the Island of Misfit Rankin/Bass Specials (first ABC Family/Freeform, now AMC). But the legacy it's left is a strong one, so much that even a "South Park" Christmas episode in 2000 was a homage to the special!
I've got the soundtrack LP album, which is basically the whole special's audio on vinyl record! This was from the days before home video when you wanted to re-enjoy the special in some form, and the sound quality was better than if you tried recording it from your television's speaker onto a tape recorder!

My family used to have an old VHS tape full of Christmas specials — which included a 1987 airing of “Frosty The Snowman” paired with “Twas The Night Before Christmas” (from CBS with the commercials intact). Watched that tape a lot as a kid, and since then have been watching both specials back-to-back.
