Some rambling about my thought process:

I really like dark purple / blue, so I tried to create a triadic colour palette around that (i.e. three hues 120° apart). They're not exactly 120°, but close enough for me. I also aligned them countershaded, because I saw a video about that some time ago :P
The vortices / moons / twirls or whatever on his back are inspired by car camouflage patterns. They are supposed to obscure the shapes of prototypes, so if it works on cars, why wouldn't it on an animal >_>
He has gone through several concept iterations over the time (concept[y]s - see what I did there), and this is the latest one. Though knowing myself, I will probably keep changing tiny things which no one else will even notice. Cough hello from future me, it's August '25 now
