Not much mystery to it; depending on the mood, make your shadows warmer or cooler than the local color if it's under white light. A simple tone difference will look realistic but doesn't have the same kick as more illustrative colors.

Generally, if you're not pleased with a color harmony or it's just looking too dull, throw an overlay layer on it and play around. Overlay layers are basically a cheat code for digital art when it comes to color.

The environment draws my awe more than the character. Not to say that the character's poorly drawn, the environment is just brilliant.
