It’s common for these creatures to be infected with oredeclinatio thanks to the ticks in the area. Not being made of slime helps with the cold but their lower bodies can still freeze. The crystal like substance also has the benefit of being durable. During the early stages of of an infection they will eat their own antlers, if they turn look the 2 here have they will still grow antlers but it will be like their body.

As long as they’re on the right ice they should be good.
The reason why they eat their antlers is because when their body’s are changing it needs minerals so with those antlers they have are good source of minerals. If they don’t get enough minerals the slime will not become a crystal.
