Looks like that Train of Thought just got... split into two.

When Phillip Lane uses the Dragon Ruby to curse a victim, there are a few possible outcomes.

The most common is that the person becomes enchanted and transformed, ending up as a puppet to the Dragon's will.

The second possibility is immunity to the enchantment—like Edward, whose strong willpower renders the curse ineffective (which is why Phillip wants to destroy him).
However, this immunity is extremely rare.

But there’s the third one… and it’s not pretty...
And that werehyena over there is about to experience a fractured existence.

While this nameless lost soul might have Edward's willpower, he lacks the same magical capacity. Edward can transform into a werelion while keeping his sense of self because of his magic. But without that magical protection, this poor soul transforms into a monster under the ruby's curse anyway. Worse still, the victim's mind shatters—creating a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation. The person maintains their personality as a human, but becomes an entirely different being as a werehyena, blindly following Phillip's orders and remembering nothing afterward.
