I normally don't even attempt to draw backgrounds because I struggle with them and they add a lot of time and effort to make them look somewhat passable. On this piece however I decided to give it a go since I had just gotten a Wacom Cintiq tablet at work and could spend time working on getting the digital look nuanced well. Unfortunately the greatness of the Cintiq tablet had the terrible drawback of making me extremely clumsy when taking art home and working on my regular tablet, -a problem that limited my time on this piece to only after hours work at the office. That sucked.

On the plus side however I'm really happy with the results. This was drawn for  relaxingdragon1 and he wanted a pseudo through-the-looking-glass effect with the environment and the results turned out far more evocative than I'd hoped for. Of course what this means is I need to keep it up and make something like this more often and better...
