Look more Redwall fan art from, I truly am devolving into a Redwall Fanartist (lol). Ok time to actually talk about this piece. For starters I'm actually really happy with how this piece came out, when I had the sketch for this piece done I wasn't super confident in it but decided to persevere and hope it'd look better when shaded and that was absolutely the right call. So with this piece I wanted to draw Slagar the Cruel from the Redwall book "Mattimeo" but specifically I wanted to draw him from his Stellar Lunaris performance at the start of the novel because I found the mental image of that performance fascinating. The idea of this large intimidating figure capering around and doing a merry little jig was what had drawn me in, so I tried to capture the image of him mid jig doing a slight leap with the cloak raised in preparation for him to spin and whirl to enchant the characters in the scene. As for Slagars outfit itself I decided to base him loosely off the cartoons version of the character since that was the version I thought most people would be familiar with. I never personally watched the cartoon, instead consuming all my Redwall media in the form of the books and the audio books, so I'm not a super huge fan of the shows versions of most characters. As a result I did take a couple liberties in his design here like adding crescent moons to his clothing and adding more stars to his cape, while also adding ear covers to the hood he wears and extending his tabard down a bit more to cover more of his legs. After all that though I still felt he was lacking a little bit and really tried to push myself a bit with the shading and highlights, initially I only had 1 shade hue but decided that wasn't good enough and added a second and eventually in some area's a third, I then added a highlight hue to show off the fact that he is dancing infront of a fire and then added a second highlight hue to the mix. After that was done I tried adding just a basic gradient background like I normally do but found that I wasn't super pleased with a plain gradient, so I added a darker hue to the gradient behind Slagar to make it appear light the night sky followed up with some quick dots of white in varied sizes to give the illusion of stars and a moon being present. Of course after all that work to the image behind Slagar I felt the left infront of Slagar was lacking so I added a fire there to show where exactly the light is coming from. After all was done I looked at the image and found myself super pleased with how it came out, the background sky and fire especially pleased me, as well as the shading on some details like his hood. This was meant to be a quick piece but ended up being one of my most high effort pieces of the last month or so, it really was the culmination of alot of techniques I've been practicing as of late.
