As a birthday gift,
demonark669 surprised me with two commissions from
whitesnowpaw which is just wonderful. This is the second of those two, and the first time we get to see RH-01 pictured. Spoilers? Well, I suppose, but the chapters have been public for a while now, haven't they? ^_~
Flopsy the Hoofbun (left) is the star of "Exodimensional Hoofbun Flopsy" (Chapter 1 Text Version / PDF Version). She's the local superhero/cryptid of a small town in Colorado, coming from the parallel world of Terra, and getting stuck there when a magical experiment explodes in her face. In Book 2, she faces off against her Mysterious Evil Twin, because what's a superhero story without an Evil Twin arc, right?
Finally face to face with RH-01, created in the secret lab of a paramilitary organization from a sample of Flopsy's blood, raised by mercenaries and trained to be a soldier for hire. She has all of Flopsy's magical enhancements, but without the enchanted horseshoes that protect her hooves from the force of her own kicks, she had to have her hooves replaced with solid steel prosthetics. Normally seen with black cargo shorts, a camo print tank top, and spiked bands on her wrist, ankles, and neck. And often a wicked sneer, especially when she thinks about the pain she wants to inflict on The Original, the reason she isn't allowed to have a name instead of a serial number, and the one the scientists and directors constantly try to compare her to. If she can destroy her, she can finally be the one and only version of her, and finally get some respect. ...Right? Who cares if her orders are 'Capture, and only kill if capture isn't an option'!
Can Flopsy stop this threat to the world before people get hurt? Can Flopsy put a stop to the lab who created her, before they have an entire army of clones to rent out to the highest bidder? And can she stay alive so Project RabbitHorse doesn't have a monopoly on superhuman hybrids, or unlock the secrets of her creation to make even more varieties? ...And can she do it without killing the 'sister' she just discovered she even has?

(Seriously, go read "Exodimensional Hoofbun Flopsy" (Chapter 1 Text Version / PDF Version)! And maybe check out my other two story series while you're at it! )

I'm actually not a fan of RH-01. The comic-book logic of her origin feels very incongruous with both the magical and down-to-earth elements of the setting.
I hope that it turns out that she was actually created using magic, because cloning does not work that way, and it goes against the otherwise realistic contemporary setting.

I don't know if I'll even be able to have the characters figure this out so it can be revealed in the story, but magic plays a part in it. Accidentally. The lab tried to clone her, but because the blood sample has a link to Flopsy's soul, it was able to piggyback on her enhancements, including regeneration. RH-01 basically has a shard of Flopsy's soul that served as the base for her to grow the rest. Because she has Flopsy's enhancements but not gear, she needed to have her hooves replaced with solid steel prosthetics to be able to withstand kicks and such.
Basically, the lab was like, "Okay, we got this sample, let's clone it and see what happens. Maybe we can get a face we can match, to figure out who's wearing the costume. We'll check back in about a year, maybe." and then "...Huh, that's... That's not a human. Also, it's come along a lot faster than it should, hasn't it? Hm. Okay, I guess it's done after only a few months. Aaaaand it talks. Okay, THAT'S weird. So... Now what? Oh, it just casually lifted a heavy thing. Iiiinteresting. Screw it, let's train it, maybe we can use it to capture the Original and interrogate her for answers. Or, failing that, we kill the original, and now we have a monopoly on super-soldiers, but we have to deflect questions on why it looks like that."

That's a lot better, thanks. That's still not how cloning works, but there are other things that can be done with blood. I can believe they could have done something to the blood sample during blood and/or DNA testing to get it to start regenerating, and they said "wait, what's the sample doing?" and they let it keep going until they ended up with a clone, and just rolled with it.
If it's due to the regeneration, and not something the lab would normally be able to do, that's a lot more believable.

Honestly, I kinda didn't really think about "how it would really work", since I was just running with the "comic book vibe". And then I was like, "Waaait, crap, this directly contradicts what I established earlier about souls. Oh boy. Okay. Think, think... Wait! The chapter with Tola doing 'blood magic' talks about how blood connects to the soul, I can use THAT!" And so the explanation is about "5% science more advanced than we currently have, 5% science more advanced than publicly known in-universe, 70% Magic Weirdness, 10% Author Shrug Emoji".
There's a good chance the scientists weren't specifically setting out to clone her, but were hoping to get something useful, like a DNA sequence or other info. And then triggered something like regeneration ("Hey, Phil, didn't you record The Sample at approx. 3.17 mL?" "Yeah." "So why is it 5.91 mL now?" "Wait, WHAT!?" "...Huh. Neat."), so they shoved it into a cloning tube and pretended that was their idea all along, hoping their boss wouldn't mind them "showing a little initiative".
...The down side of that being the reason, however, is that it gives Flopsy far more regeneration than I want to give her. I'd been trying to figure out where the line "feels right", as far as "How far can it bring her back from?", so having a copy grow from a tiny sample of blood (even if triggered by some outside impetuous) feels like it's probably past that line. I've been sorta "feeling out scenarios" in my head, including during her most recent fight, and one of them was "Flopsy is killed during the fight but her regeneration revives her after she was left for dead, and now she has to try to make her way to safety/home without her collar because RH-01 took it as a trophy (and possibly tries to impersonate her only for it to fail miserably)" But it just didn't come together in my head in a way that felt... I dunno, believable? Internally consistent? Not to mention the way it destroys a lot of the "stakes" in future fights, if she (or the audience) knows she can just get back up eventually.
So... I only partially know the answer. ^_^;; I don't often do stuff where I don't know 100% how everything happened behind the scenes (even if I am wrong about the science, I'm not perfect), but this is one of those times where I decided to let Rule of Cool get me started and figured I'd work it out along the way.
(MMY's Za Bastard also has a lot of unknowns, but I feel like I've gotten a pretty good handle on his personality and his antics in the background that Vayryn doesn't know about, and how it's affecting the world in ways that will surface eventually. Like him sending a package that was supposed to arrive on July 4th but got lost in shipping, like the FBI agent heading Vayryn's case got reassigned to "work from home/desk duty" and is rather upset about it, and why I keep saying "She's the only (known) yinglet"... ^_~)
