IN THE HEART OF DARKNESS
“Here in the heart of darkness, I have found myself.”
There is an honesty in life that only the deeply broken can understand,
A truth to living that only those who have been hurt can comprehend,
And an earnest love which only the forgotten and abused are able to give.
“Here in the heart of darkness, I know myself.”
Where was I when the moon fell silent and the bright stars turned black?
Where am I now that the sun can no longer rise and fill my hopeless eyes with endless light?
And where will I be when all that I have ever desired is swallowed whole by the very earth itself?
“Here in the heart of darkness, I have become myself.”
The once vibrant petals that lay scattered at my naked feet have dulled with time and browned with age,
And the aching wounds which have exposed my pain stretch across my fragile frame like jealous flames as I try to heal myself yet again,
For the memories of my past now sink their fangs into me as I struggle against the sorrow which seeks to consume all of who I could have been.
“Here in the heart of darkness, I will reclaim myself.”
When the harrowing truth of life becomes too unbearable in the face of untamed fear and pain,
When the break of dawn seems incomprehensible in the wake of scathing shadows which twist and claim,
And even when the flowers themselves promise to never bloom again as I spill the very last of my burning tears,
“I know in my heart that it is only through this darkness which seems to have no end in sight that I can finally appreciate the boundless light that illuminates every aspect of my waking life.”
