Yes. The plot itself was twisted into some surreal, sci-fi, filler, conspiracy themed story.
All of the actors IMO except for Hopper himself were poorly chosen and even Hopper had to suffer due to the cringing story that he had to work with. This is probably why Nintendo never licensed anything to Hollywood again.
It was truly a slap in the face.
