In my head, the tail is mostly for balancing and has a claw at the end (not shown here) for additional yoink capability. Realistically speaking, it would have to be much thicker to accomodate for additional coolant plumbing along with actuators, structural components, etc. But this is just my understanding!
The picture you've linked has a peculiar style to it, I have never imagined Snow Crash this way.
