Protodraco Vulgaris or Common Land Drake
Often referred to as Landies
Believed to be a distant relative to dragons the Protodraco Vulgaris are a widespread minor magical species. They travel in herds and have adapted to a variety of habitats. During the fall and spring seasons they migrate vast distances between territories.
Landies are fully sentient with a similar intelligence and emotional range to humans. Powerful instincts often override this intelligence and can leave them acting like common beasts.
Endurance is the defining trait of the species with Strength being a close second. Able to perform long periods of work or travel without tiring. Their toughened bodies can not only withstand incredible punishment but recover from injury at twice the speed of mortal races. They have great vision but average hearing.
In the depiction above we see a typical Landie along with examples of variation in the species. It is important to remember that this depiction only shows the primary variations. Rare variations, such as albinism, are not represented here.
Much of the variation, like eyes and horns, are self explanatory but a few things should be defined.
To the right we see a good example of teeth, jaws and tongue. Landies are omnivores and as such do not have mouths filled with deadly teeth like true dragons. A natural gap between the front and back sets of teeth provides the perfect point for a bit to rest when a Landie is bridled.
Lower left are the claws. Which are more tools than weapons. Yes, they are unsheathed in battle but it's like strapping a dagger to a battering ram. Landies deal damage primarily with strength and bite. Claws are, instead, used as tools to grip rough terrain. Unsheathed claws can also be a sign of distress, fear or anger when in social situations.
Bottom center is a display of the primary Landie colors. Obviously there is a lot of variety and patterns that can exist. Spots, freckles, patches and more can decorate a Landies color scheme.
Those who like detail will notice that Landies are finally showing off their paw pads. Like any creature these can be black, brown, gray or even pink. We can see specks of pink on the pads of this fellow.
This new reference takes into account a lot of changes I wanted to see implemented as time went on. The original reference still has a special place in my heart as RedFurryDemon went through a huge amount of trouble to help me make it happen. So I am not necessarily retiring it, but this new reference is now the default.
