Even if you can 100% detect fakes, that doesn't help deal with the coins that have lost a little bit of mass from one of the various ways of removing a small amount of metal for collection. Sure, you can do various things with the edge to prevent clipping but there are plenty of ways to put little scratches in coins without losing the resulting gold dust.
You don't simply put little scratches and nicks in the coin, you do that _and collect the gold you have removed_. So you go from having a bag of 100 gold coins to having a bag of 100 gold coins and a coin's worth of gold dust and/or shavings.
You then spend the coins with people who won't weigh them and will just accept them at their minted value.

So, what, you shave a thousand coins to gain one?! Better off finding your own gold mine, and mining it.
And the only place weight has in modern currency, I'm quite sure, is for automated counting. The actual composition of the currency no longer serves a purpose in the value of the printed amount. What you're talking about is an old, outdated system from when the value of money was based on what it was made from. Today, the value is based on credit and lending. The coins can literally be made out of mud and it wouldn't made a difference.
Prime coins are just made from gold because Ambar likes being fancy and "flaunting it".

Clipping got a lot more than 0.1% of the mass of the coins¹, and even sweating, (shaking or tumbling a mass of coins to generate dust), is a lot less work than mining even a rich placer deposit². If it really were pointless, mints would not have developed coin design elements to prevent them, (the edges of coins are milled to make clipping obvious and the face designs are so detailed to make plugging easier to spot).
Using fiat currency made of precious metal actually makes clipping &c. more attractive: The metal you remove isn't going to impact the value of the coins but you still end up with the metal to sell. Also, the only reason to use gold or silver in coinage is for how it gives the coins intrinsic value, they actually _suck_ for making coins because they are too soft.
1: It's not uncommon to find Roman coins that have been repeatedly clipped and are down to less than half of their original weight.
2: Hard rock mining of gold is not something lone people can really do. Meanwhile, anyone can hang a double-layered bag full of coins from their horse's saddle.

They did, they brought it up when the nanospirits were talking about the Crest.
The reason it doesnt get dropped more is likely because they don't want to sit there, use a number, and then fall into that trap that everyone does where the different values assigned to different things ends up not making any sense.

So it was a quick throwaway thing then. No wonder I didn't remember it.
But really, in this comic where one of the alleged focuses is a business, you'd think the currency would've come up before now if they have their own specific one. And really, if I had the time and drive to do it, I'd go back and see if any other currency was ever mentioned, because I kinda suspect that may be the case, given how recent this development seems to be.

The reason we don't use the gold/silver standard is because there isn't enough gold and silver to BACK it. Either Neo Earth was made with enough to keep that standard without devaluing the metals-- Or Ambar knows how to get more as is needed to keep the economy stable.
