I took inspiration from the Naruto designs of Lord Gamabunta and Jiraiya, but this is not exactly meant to be either of them. This was inspired by the Original Jiraiya's mentor, The Immortal Toad Sage.
The Character of Jiraiya in Naruto is based on a Chinese Robin hood-like character, adapted into a Japanese story, which then became a famous Kabuki play
Jiraiya originally known as Ogata Shuma Hiroyuki, was a Prince whose kingdom was taken from him by a rival Noble possessed by a snake demon called Orochimaru. He and his wife Tsunade escaped from the castle and were hidden away where he took on the secret identity of Jiraiya "Young Thunder". The two of them were trained by Senso Dojin, initially appearing to be a frail old man but was revealed to actually be a Giant Magic Toad. He taught Jiraiya in the ways of Toad Magic and Tsunade the ways of Slug Magic which have a sort of Rock-Paper-Scissors relationship with Snake Magic. Toad is strong against Slug, Slug is strong against Snake, and Snake is Strong against Toad. With these newfound powers they returned to their kingdom and retake it from the evil Orochimaru.

Since I have been drawing a lot of Pokemon Ninjas recently, it felt appropriate to draw one based on a famous Ninja Master. Jiraiya is a little too well known through Naruto so I decided to go for his less well known Mentor.
