I've started using a secondary technique for drawing that is a little bit faster, and lets me better feel out the overall shape of what I want to draw. There is a slight reduction in the quality of the line art, but I feel like it's not really noticeable unless you zoom in. There will be a lot of character drawings like this coming at you in the near future, including some of your OCs.
