The idea is that they're some sort of sea slug that evolved in the deserts to mimic succulents when the ocean that used to cover the area dried up but if you get them you're perfectly welcome to come up with any concept for this character you wish! Definitely might do smth with that idea for a species down the road though, that sounds fun 83
