Story by me below:
When somebody offers you the impossible but actually delivers it's an amazing and wonderful thing.
How I attained the pale mask I have on now was an odd series of events that many would consider inexplicable, but they did in fact happen. It started on a walk home from work one day where I passed through a mostly abandoned strip mall by my place. It was full of long forgotten store fronts like closed down Chinese places, former drycleaners, and saddest of all no longer open toy shops. It was a sad state of affairs but living in the lower income part of my town places like the strip mall wasn't uncommon at all. However, oddly enough after passing by another emptied out place I saw a place that wasn't closed, even though it wasn't the last time I was there it was just a few hours ago.
I saw a remarkable sight of a newly opened mask shop right where the old Galactic Arcade used to be. I couldn't believe the sudden turn around from the sad remains of what once was the local teen hang out into a mystical looking mask shop with old oak shelves full of finely crafted masks of all sorts of creatures from simple Lions and Wolves to Dragons and Krakens. The walls had also been repainted from the space black with hand drawn galaxies on them to walls with a more traditional off white color. Finally the standard double glass doors had been replaced with more traditional large wooden ones that stood over me with great presence.
"Are you going to come in or are you going to stay outside dumbfounded all day?" A raspy voice said from seemingly nowhere yet all around me said as I looked around startled confused.
"I..." right after I spoke aloud and suddenly I felt a force pulling me into the store by the collar of my shirt. I tried to fight it but no matter how hard I did I couldn't get away and as I did the doors opened miraculously by themselves.
Soon enough I was inside the shop itself surrounded by the many faces of the masks within the establishment all around me. I looked above, below, and around me and saw a multitude of strange profiles such as Griffins, Orcs, and even other human faces. The place had a strange vibe about it that was almost magical to me, like I had stepped into a piece of another world that had somehow ended up in mine.
"Well, are you just going to look around or are you going to say "Hello"." The raspy voice from before had returned, however unlike last time the voice was coming from directly in front of me. I turned to face its point of origin to find a small green creature sitting at a mahogany desk in a professional business chair way too large for them, their desk was full of masks, crystals, potions, and other magical things. The strange being had golden eyes, large pointed ears and a noise, sharp pointy teeth making up it smile, and was wearing a makeshift outfit of a red over coat, a half buttoned white undershirt, a long black and gray scarf, and finally a worn out black hat tilt to the side of his head. "Well come on, what's the matter? Cat got your tongue, or have you never seen a Goblin before?"
"A Goblin?" I asked and his smile gained a certain wickedness to it by my comment.
"Yes, my dear new friend, a Goblin, which is what I am." The Goblin spoke with a clearly patronizing tone in his voice. "I'm a simple owner of this magical establishment specializing in masks that has recently expanded to your world for a new injection of customers."
"Uhh..." I was completely lost to say the least by his comments and I felt confused beyond belief. In the state I was in I only asked a simple question "I'm not dreaming or high right now am I?"
"Heavens no friend," The owner of the impossible shop said to me feigning shock "I do not consort with customers in their state of slumber or in their altered state of mind like others do. I'm a simple being who merely opened a way for your world to meet mine as I have done several times before for other planes of existence I've wished to expand my business into."
"Fascinating..." I said casually while screaming on the inside about how insane this all was. Here I was a random no name nobody consorting with an extra dimensional being who's apparently opened his business up to multiple different realms of being and our world is merely another chance for him to get some new blood into his store front. "I'm assuming you sell these masks and other items to people?"
"Yes friend, I do," He replied with a massive smile on his face and a cheery tone coming out of it as he spoke. "And I have a simple request for you, if you please."
I could feel the color rush out of my face when I heard that because knowing my fairytales and folklore as I do I know this would most likely be something horrible. My mind swinged back and forth between what this creature's "request" could be. Would be my body for him to have a human face to greet the customers with, a slave-like job for a thousand years where I'd wither away to nothing, or perhaps he'd steal my face so he could sell it to somebody else. That last idea stuck in my head because I saw the full face masks he had in his inventory around me and they were extremely life like, which in my fearful state I thought were the face of real people they'd stolen in the past to make a profit from.
"What do you want?" I sheepishly spoke like a scared child in a dark alleyway. "My fac-"
"NO, absolutely not, friend." The mask salesman answered my unfinished question abruptly. "I'm not interested in stealing faces at all, for I'm not a face taker like many of my fellow mask sellers are, I'm a mask maker".
"Oh," I replied relieved but still worried considering I could still be in a lot of danger. "So what do you want from me then?"
"You're very lucky my friend," the Goblin said with a toothy smile "I want you to be the first human customer of this plane of existence to try out one of my masks for absolutely no cost."
"You want to give me a free mask?" I was confused because in these sorts of stories there's usually a price for such things.
"If that's what you wish or any of my other items for sale are an option for you as well." They answered me "But now that you mentioned it I would prefer if you pick a mask for that's my primary product I sell here, and I'd be most interested how your people would react to wearing one."
"Umm..." I began to think about what he meant by that last part and as my mind started to fill with ideas on what "react" could imply. "What do you mean by "react"?"
"Well, due to the nature of my wears I found that depending on the world and the people who live in it could have unexpected conquests to what could happen when they put on a mask of mine." He answered my query about this and I didn't find it comforting to say the least on the subject. "Of course that's mostly with races that have aspects to their physical or spiritual selves that make it more complicated for my product to work."
"I see..." It became very clear to me why he was offering one of his masks for free. I began to think of a way to minimize the possible damage I was most likely about to go under as possible and I tried the obvious option first. "Maybe, I'm not the best person for the job and so go..."
"Come now, my friend," The shopkeeper's voice became very sweet and gentle in response to my wish to back out of the deal he was trying to get me to partake in. "When are you ever going to get an opportunity like this again in your admittedly short human life, to select something from out of your world for free. I know what I said about possible "issues" with my product but I swear that I'll take full responsibility for whatever may fall upon you if anything were to happen to you because of one of my products."
"Hmm..." I found what they said a bit reassuring but at the same time I must admit to you that I still had my reservations about the deal he was promising to me. "So these masks can turn me into whatever they represent, but is it preeminent or not?"
"They can be taken off if you so shall wish, friend, but I must say depending on what you get you might not want to." They seemed to begin to realize I was someone they needed to butter up before they could get me to do anything they wanted me to do, suddenly a light seemed to go off in their head. "Perhaps, someone like you wants to be something a bit more ideal than just a standard human. Not saying there's anything wrong with being human or with yourself, but maybe you want to be something more powerful, stronger, able to perhaps live up to a more grand version of yourself."
"I'm not sure you have-" Before I could finish my sentence the Goblin stopped me in my tracks.
"I mean, if you already have a more ideal version of yourself in your mind already I could make a custom mask just for you and you alone."
I paused at the prospect of that and I thought long and hard about it because there was in fact a more ideal self in my head...and a drawing of him on my phone. Of course, I was referring to my fursona and how many times I wanted to be their strong, artificing, Minotaur self more than anything. I wanted to feel the strength of being a large bull man, to have the ability to create and infuse items with magic spells and effects, and I wanted to be a skilled proud confident warrior as well. To be Christopher would be a dream come true and I was staring at a being that could do that.
"Well, there's this one character I have that could work..." I spoke knowing they'd sink their teeth into this opportunity and I'm ashamed to say I both let them and wanted them to do it.
"Oh really," His smile was never bigger than then, because he knew that he'd gotten another sucker into his web. "Tell me about them, friend."
"Huh?" That's what came out of my mouth as I looked down at my custom mask order still in its packaging. It had arrived just a little after I got home from work merely a day after I'd ordered it, but there it was right in my simple studio apartment. "I expected something grander."
My disappointment for my order was down to the fact it didn't seem like anything really remarkable in any way. It was a simple white bull masquerade mask that you could perhaps find if you look hard enough in multiple antique shops, but yet at the same time I felt the slightest bit of magic around the item that I couldn't explain.
It looks like any old fancy mask, and yet... I thought this to myself as I took the mask out of its packaging for me to get a better look at it. Once I did I felt a shot of energy flow from the hand I was holding the object in surge up my arm, to my neck, and finally to my skull. The force felt like nothing else I'd ever experienced in my life, because the energy that came from the mask almost spoke to me in a way and it said "Put me on." I freaked out at this and dropped the mask out of fear and shock right onto my apartment's carpet, and yet a part of me was curious and almost invigorated by the object's surge in power to me.
"You really aren't a normal mask are you?" I asked the mask out loud like it was a separate person as I looked down at it, despite how insane that sounds. I did know however this was a special mask and I shouldn't assume it wouldn't have any strange property tied to it. In any case, my desire to discover more about it began to overwhelm me and I slowly bent down to pick it up. I grabbed it in my hand and this time there wasn't as powerful of a surge, but I still felt the presence of someone else in the room with me when I picked it up. "You aren't going to hurt me are you?"
Once I asked that question I could feel another wave of power coming over me and a new bit of information came from the mask. In my mind, the energy seemed to say that it wanted nothing more to be worn by me for it's entire reason for being is for it to be upon my face, so it had no intention of harming me in any way shape or form. That made a lot of sense to me because I had commissioned it into being by my request for it to be made by that Goblin shopkeeper, and it be an object specifically made to be wore by me for me, so there was logic in what the mask was feeding into my mind about not wanting to hurt me. Strangely enough I wanted to wear it because I felt sorry for it and wanted its purpose in life to be fulfilled, however doubt still filled my mind.
"You promise you mean me no harm and I can return to my old self if I stop wearing you?" I inquired, wanting to make absolutely certain I was going to be alright if I wore this thing. The mask expelled another stream of energy into me and it made clear I'd be safe and I'd love wearing it as long as I'd made sure to be responsible while I wore it. I felt reassured by its claims of goodwill towards me and wanting to sate my curiosity I agreed to put it on. "I hope you're telling the truth."
After taking off and putting down my glasses on a nearby table by the door, I began to put on the mask as it wished me to do and as I did I noticed something strange happened as I did. The strange thing was that I faced little to no resistance when it came to putting it on, unlike other masks I had worn in the past. At first I thought it was merely because it was a custom order and therefore perfectly molded to my face, but then I remembered that I didn't give that Goblin any measurement of mine at all. In fact during the process of getting information on what I wanted from the mask he merely listened to me rant about my character's backstory and appearance and stared at me intensely. Perhaps it was just magic at work or maybe after doing God knows how many masks for so many different kinds of people by merely looking upon me he could measure the dimensions of my skull without needing any tools at all. Realizing this I thought it was both very cool and a bit terrifying in an eldritch sense at how he was able to do this. No matter what though I continued to put the mask on my face until it was perfectly on me with no strain or discomfort at all to me.
"This is pretty cool" I said aloud with a smile as I was pleased with how comfortable the mask was on my face, but then I heard in my mind something as clear as day.
"We will begin" the mask said to me in a deep rich voice I couldn't help but recognize as Christopher in my mind.
