Really? But that's so... impersonal! :X Probably just means you've got more social input than is sane to have. XD Beyond that, the only good 'messenger' these days is Google Talk, the others are so bogged down and full of extra BS that they aren't worth using. I have old versions of everything installed just to keep the fluff out, and most of those installs required a gimmick in order to actually accomplish.
Technically, no. But it generally integrates with Gmail, so you can sometimes talk to people who sign in to check their gmail account. Not a favored messenger for me, but it's the only one I use the 'latest' version of because it's so simple.
As for not being online often, there's two things that can happen with it. Either to be online very little and people forget who you are / jump you every time you -are- online, or to be online all the time and either be easily distractable / not always available to talk. I have a few from both categories on my buddy lists, but I favor those who are online most of the time, and who use proper away/idle statuses. I suppose the third option is to just set aside dedicated social time, but when you don't have many people -on- a messenger, it does make it hard to remember to do so.
