"Science officer's log, stardate 48865.48. As part of a routine survey of the Asmodeus system, Ensign Strauss, Lieutenant Commander Worf, and myself have beamed down to examine what appears to be quite the archaeological discovery on the surface of Asmodeus III - a set of ruins that appear to have belonged to a thousands, possibly even millennia old species that seems to have vanished from the face of the planet.
The ruins are curiously pristine, considering their age, and, even more strangely, there are no signs in the vicinity as to what caused the species to disappear; none of the typical symptoms of an extinction event, such as a viral outbreak, extra-planetary collision, or sudden climate shift, are in evidence. It appears that they all simply . . . vanished. Commander Worf is in the process of examining what we believe to be a ritual arch now, which may yield answers."
Tapping his combadge, his log now complete, Doctor McCoy moved over to where his fellow officers were examining the arch, giving them both a smile. Worf nodded, as stolid and implacable as ever, a handheld, deep layer scanner being calibrated in his hands, while Strauss idled, seemingly at a loss as to what to do. It was hard to blame him - for such an interesting discovery, it was giving them precious little in the way of answers. They just had to hope that the data that lay beneath the surface would give them a clue as to what had happened here . . .
