"Camp life for officers was a little better than that of the common soldier. Some officers had many of the luxuries that they had enjoyed at home. They had better food, whiskey, servants, and sometimes even wives would visit. Most officers were professional military men. Some had become offices by the vote of the men in their company or regiment. Others were appointed through political influence. Souvenirs of all types were sent to family and friends. Such things as Confederate money, newspapers, political ribbons, and photographs were of great fascination to the folks back home. Whether officer or private, the one thing they had in common was the terrible taste of battle."
