"The cavalry were the "eyes" of the army. Their main purpose was to inform the commanders of his opponents location and maneuvers. It was also the job of the cavalry to attempt to screen the movements of their own army and to protects its flank. They also acted as a mobile strike force against enemy communications and supply lines. Troopers traveled light and lived off the land. They would carry a saber, pistol, and a carbine rifle that could be loaded easily while seated in the saddle. In addition, they also carried an extra blanket, oilcloth, and items for the care of their horse. The more flamboyant cavalry officers of the time included George A. Custer of the Union, and J.E.B. Stuart and John S. Bosby of the Confederacy."
