Finally doing something with Astrid and threw Raine into the mix, both need updated refs huuu
Decided I wanted to loosely base Witch's [K]night in the setting of one of my favorite Final Fantasy games, in Ivalice but Tactics (or War of the Lions) version
---
Notes:
-Raine and Astrid grew up together in Orbonne Monastery. They spent a lot of time together since they didn't do so well around the other children. Astrid was constantly bullied for being overweight, and people were generally afraid or weirded out by Raine for her ability to see spirits and sometimes converse with them in the underground library.
-Eventually, both parted ways, finding different work when they came of age. Astrid became a squire and climbed the ranks to Captain of the Guard. Raine worked at a tavern in Dorter Trade City before taking jobs as a healer during treasure-hunting missions, often getting help from trapped ghosts to locate things in exchange for helping them pass on.
-Years later, the two met up again, with Astrid recruiting Raine to help investigate a dungeon. The mission went poorly, as the group was tricked by a spirit that turned out to be an Ultima Demon and its minions. Many of their party members were wiped out and had their souls taken after being hit with an Unholy Darkness spell; those who survived barely made it out after their black mage flooded the tunnel.
-The incident unfortunately left Raine riddled with guilt, as she was the one who made contact with the spirit, believing it would help. Either due to the spell she was hit with or the guilt of her faith being shattered, she became unable to cast any magic. The event also intensified her ability to see and hear the dead more vividly, especially those who had fallen during wartime, causing her to lose sleep and nearly descend into madness. She became dependent on sleeping potions from local chemists for some peace, and when those started becoming less effective, she turned to a witch who had a knight as her familiar for help. The witch's potions helped, but not without side effects, and they became terribly addictive.
-Astrid became a mercenary after her king was murdered. When she ran into Raine again, she was shocked to see her best friend in such a sorry state compared to the cheerful and bright girl she once knew. Despite some protests, Astrid took Raine in and helped her out of her addiction. The former healer found some solace around Astrid amidst her mental turmoil, eventually getting better, though she still experienced nightmares from time to time.
-Since Raine could no longer cast magic, Astrid suggested a change of class to Dragoon, personally training her to use a spear...

Aww, poor Rayne had quite the bad luck :( Astrid seems so sweet, they make a lovely duo <3
Also a capybara character is really cool and unique, you made her such a nice lady. Really enjoying the concepts and story bits so far!
On another note,
she turned to a witch who had a knight as her familiar for help.
Ahh yesss OC lore cross references 👀

seems like making at least one in the relationship have some sort of bad going for them is a reoccurring thing for me lol
but i guess cuz to a degree its relateable for me and giving them someone that helps bring them up to their potential is comforting :'3
yeeees, I adopted her a few years ago, was abit unsure of what to do with her exactly but after doodling her with Raine once, it stuck and here she is!
I've always loved her design and she seemed like such a sweet teddy bear kind of character <33
haha yes! both pairs are set in the same setting and do run into each other quite abit after Raines problem :3

It do be quite on-brand for your characters, yes, hahaha. But I agree, it's very comforting to "let it out" on an OC and in the same stroke making it better for them with a new friend, partner or good opportunity. Went that route quite a few times, too, it's really uplifting.
Ohh that's cool, sometimes these things just take time to ripen and test out. The characterization you concluded for her is really fitting.
Big and kind characters are also just such a weak spot of mine, both male and female, but the trope (for obvious reasons) usually goes for males, so I'm all here for a gentle giant lady 💗
Really looking forward to all the new things you'll be discovering about these ladies! =3
