In answer to your question, yes we do have hamburgers and fries in England. But we call French Fries...Chips!
Please Note that the burger meat does contain Gluten and it does contain Egg, for any intolerances or allergies.
For The Burger Meat | Makes 8 approx
250g Lean Minced Beef
250g Minced Pork
1/2 Cup of Dry Breadcrumbs or Panko
1 Egg, beaten
Salt and Pepper to taste (about one teaspoon's worth)
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the Pork and Beef by hand along with a dusting of salt and pepper. Then add the Breadcrumbs and beaten Egg, combine by hand again until it's all one consistent colour and there are no patches of unmixed beef or pork. You may also add whatever other spices or flavours you want, or a bit of grated garlic/onion.
2. Divide and roll the meat into eight or ten evenly sized meatballs. As long as the meat hasn't been frozen beforehand, these can be frozen and used at a later date.
For The Actual Burger/Chips
Two Meatballs (as described above)
One large Potato, peeled and cut into chips
1L Vegetable Oil
One or two Sesame Seed Buns (in my case I went with one double burger)
Cheese, Pickles, Sauces, whatever you want as your toppings
1. Start by heating up your Vegetable Oil to 180*C (about 350F) in a large saucepan. Your saucepan should be half full at most so there's no risk of the oil spilling over when deep frying. Alternatively use your deep fat fryer if you have one.
2. Meanwhile, rinse your chips in some cold water to get rid of any excess starch. When the water runs clear, drain the chips onto some paper towel for them to dry.
3. Gently place your chips in the oil and deep fry for ten to fifteen minutes, or until golden brown. Be aware that the oil may drop in temperature when you add the chips; so if you are using a hob and saucepan, you may need to turn up the heat to bring the oil back up to temperature.
4. About halfway through the chips' cooking time, put a frying pan on medium/high heat with a tablespoon of oil. Add your two meatballs and firmly press them flat with either a burger press or similar kitchen tool. Fry on both sides for 1-2 minutes each.
5. Once your chips are golden brown, remove and transfer onto some paper towels to soak up any excess oil. By now your burger patties should also be cooked and ready to assemble while the chips rest. Season with salt and pepper and plate up.
Notes
. I used Maris Piper Potatoes for the chips. Less starchy, ideal chip material.
