a few years ago, I bought a rifle, a .308 m24 to teach myself mildots, and all the assorted skills of the sniper.
a year ago, I realized I would never get good at rifle if I relied the army to give me all my ammo, so I bought my own ammo, built a M16, and went to work almost every weekend. taught myself range estimation, holdovers, windage, scopes, everything I could get a class on. Studied the M855 till my fingers turned black.
today, I bought in the upper receiver off my second best rifle, and installed it on one of the company M4 rifles. added a buttstock, bipod.....then showed it to my company commander.
Long conversation later, and I am the FIRST designated marksman in my entire battalion, and I got authorization to bring this rifle to both NTC, and afghanistan. He also promised to get me a legit sniper rifle before we go.
I haven't been this proud in years.

CONGRATULATIONS! the rifle looks great and with your well thought out training I would say you definitely deserve kudos!
I think you'll do just fine as the marksman of your squad as you show perfect dedication and a will to learn and improve, I'm VERY proud of you.
Don't quite know what rifle they will give you either an M24 , SR-25 M110 or the familiar M-14
Though given what you have shown to your C.O. it might just be the Knight's M110 as the overall learning curve will be much shorter for you as you have put in respectable time in with what could be considered it's "little brother".
I wish you the best to you and yours and hope you get all the training and equipment you want and need !
