William has always been a shy, timid and soft spoken little rabbit. He mostly enjoyed spending most of his free time burying his little nose into dusty old books. Or sitting quietly outside to watch the birds fly.
William never liked to speak often. He was born with a stutter. And was often mocked and bullied because of it. With his poor eye sight William had to wear glasses. Which his bullies often broke. Since he was so small he never had the strength to fight back. He never wanted to anyway. His mother always told him to have kindness in his heart. Even to those who may be cruel.
When William grew older. He wished to start studying to become a wizard like his great grandfather. His studies and skills in magics were improving over time. But he has had a few issues with clumsiness. And has accidentally caused some trouble with some of his spells and incantations. Causing a flurry of colorful explosions.
He began his journey in his magic studies by becoming the apprentice of a grumpy old wizard named Marlin. He helped Marlin with chores and followed instructions that he was given while the old wizard begrudgingly taught him.
All seemed to be going well in his studies. But, something happened that changed the course of William's life. Marlin told him that he was not ready for any advanced magical studies. So he banned William from using anything from his powerful tomes until he thought that he was ready.
William was saddened by this. He worked so hard to prove himself. And he had improved with his spell casting. It's just that he always seemed to fail at the last second when conjuring an enchantment.
He wanted to prove himself. He wanted to show the grumpy old wizard that he was ready. So he set off to find the keys to the wizard's tomes. He thought that if he could just pull off a good spell. He can show the wizard that he was ready to move on to more advanced spells.
He found the wizard's keys in his office. While Marlin was asleep. And quietly made his way to the closet that had the wizard's books locked away. He carefully tried to pull a book from the closet. This book was very heavy and it made William stumble and trip on his own feet while he carried it to a light source. The book landed with a thud on a nearby table. This caused the wizard to stir and wake from the noise.
William tried to work fast. Reading instructions and incantations with shaking hands. He could hear the wizard stomping towards his study with an angry growl. William scribbled some symbols on a piece of parchment while his hands trembled. He held out a simple little twig over the symbols. His plan was to create a simple wand to show the wizard. It seemed to have worked. But the wand was unstable. Colorful sparks flew from it's tip as he held it out. Shooting blue embers across the room.
Marlin slammed the door to his office open in anger. And this caused William to jump with fright. And he accidentally aimed the makeshift wand at the wizard. The wand exploded. Sending a powerful ray of light shooting towards the open doorway and right into the wizard's chest. Knocking him back with a hard thud.
Things were silent for a moment. Until William noticed the night robes that the wizard was wearing began to shrink. With tears in his eyes, William walked over to see what he had done. Thinking he may have turned the wizard into dust, William silently cried as he panicked. The wizard's robes were still for a second. Until he saw them begin to move. A small bulge from the neck of the robe writhed and wriggled around until a small, fuzzy head popped out from the robe.
William breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the wizard was still alive. But, different now. "What have you done!?" The now tiny wizard squealed out in anger and disbelief. His voice now a lot more squeaky than before. William had some how turned the old wizard into a mouse. "I I-I." William stammered. Struggling to come up with the proper words to explain himself. "Silence!" The wizard barked out in anger. "I'm not sure how you've done this." "But you are going to fix it." Marlin said with venom in his words.
Marlin ordered William to carry him outside to seek out another wizard that lived close by. William did as he was told. Tears still streaming down his face. He ran out to find the other wizard in order to turn Marlin back.
Carrying the mouse on his shoulder. William hurriedly ran towards the directions Marlin was pointing towards. It had rained during that night. So the dirt road that William was running on was muddy and slippery. After a few moments of running and slipping, William found the wizard's old cottage on top of a hill. William was barely able to catch his breath when the wizard shouted at him in his ear to keep going.
So William trudged on. Through the muddy pathway towards the other wizard's house. It was dark out so he couldn't quite see where he was going. And he ended up tripping over a tree root and falling face first into a pile of mud. This sent the little wizard mouse flying into a nearby pond.
Marlin pulled himself out of the pond water, while coughing. "Why you stupid little-" Marlin paused as he felt a wet and sticky object stick to his back. He let out a shriek that was cut short as he was pulled into the large mouth of a frog. William tried to get to his feet and to try and stop the frog. But it was already too late. The frog had swallowed the little mouse whole. It let out a burp and jumped into the pond. Disappearing into the dark water.
William sat there in stunned silence. A tear ran down his fuzzy cheek. What was he going to do? "This is all my fault" He thought. "What am I going to tell people?" William's thoughts raced through his mind. He sat there for a few more moments. And then he slowly got up. He felt lite headed and dizzy. Eyes wide and filled with fear and dread he turned and started to run. Running as fast his legs could carry him.
He didn't care where he was going. He just ran. Eventually William stumbled upon a forest he didn't recognize. He was exhausted. So he decided to rest under a tree. Hiding himself between two large tree roots. At first he couldn't sleep. The thoughts of what happened to Marlin haunted his mind. After a few hours of crying. William eventually drifted off to sleep.
In the morning. William slowly opened his eyes. His eyes shot open as he found his surroundings were different. Everything felt warm and soft. He felt his body swaying slowly. He noticed some light peering out from above him. So he sat up and lifted his head out of the soft surroundings that he found himself in. He looked around. His vision was blurry at first until he put his glasses on. With his vision now in focus, he could see that he was inside the pouch of a strange creature.
"Oh your awake." The creature spoke. "I'm sorry, I hope you don't mind." "You looked lost, little one." The creature said in a soft and oddly soothing voice. "Don't worry now." "I'm taking you to my friend." "She'll keep you safe until we can find your home again." The creature said with a warm smile.
William didn't know what to say. He still felt oddly tired. And he slowly started to drift to sleep again. When he awoke again. He noticed he was wrapped in a large and soft quilt. And he was laying on a very large and creaky sofa. After putting his glasses on again. He looked around at his surroundings. He noticed a large gray and black tail swaying back and forth. He looked up from the tail and saw an unnaturally large fox, softly humming as she cooked something in a pot over a large wood stove. She was wearing an apron over a large black shirt.
"Oh, you're awake." "Hello there dear." The fox said in a gentle voice. "It seems like you had a long night last night." She said as she dipped a large ladle into the pot and poured hot steaming soup into a a wooden bowl. And then cut a piece of fresh bread from a loaf.
"You must be hungry." The fox said as she slowly approached the little rabbit. William tensed up a little. Shaking and thumping one of his feet as the fox knelt down in front of him. "It's ok honey." "I'm not going to hurt you." The fox said with a sad smile. "My name is Xina." "Here." "Please have some of this." "You'll start to feel better." She said as she lowered a wooden tray in front of him. Gave him another small, reassuring smile before she stood up again to return to the stove.
William hesitated at first. But he slowly took spoon full of the steaming soup and gave it a try. The soup gave him a warm feeling through his body. It reminded him of the way his mother used to make soup for him. His eyes started to well up with tears. And he sniffled a little while he quietly sipped it. "Are you alright sweetheart?" Xina asked him as she looked over to him. "I don't mean to pry." "But you seem to be very upset.." Xina said as she removed the pot from the burner and put the burning fire in the stove out.
William shook his head as he wiped tears off of his face. "What's your name hun?" Xina asked with a look of concern in her eyes. "W-William." He said with a shake in his voice. "You are safe here William." "If you're in trouble." "I would like to try to help you if I can." Xina said as she placed her hands into her apron pocket.
William sniffled and whipped his nose. Before he began to explain what happened. Xina listen patiently and intently. After he was done, he took his glasses off and started to cry. Hiding his head as he held his legs in his arms.
"What happened was not your fault honey.." "It was a terrible accident.." "But an accident, just the same.." Xina said as she sat beside him. "I don't know if I could ever go back." William said. "E-even if M-Marlin some how survived." "He would th-throw me out anyway." "Or worse.." He said as a tear fell from his cheek.
"I'll help you hun." Xina said as she rests a hand on his shoulder. "You can stay here for as long as you need." "And if you need my help going forward." "I'll see what I can do for you.." William calmed down and slowly stopped crying as he whipped his nose with his sleeve.
