That explains his robot body in the first game. Afterwards, he got worried that somebody would figure him out with that sort of a body theme, on top of the Mavericks, so he started making himself more humanoid bodies.

That was Zero. He then had to destroy it, thus plunging him into a rage which resulted in his becoming a Maverick. When Sigma defeated him, the blow to his head made him forget about his teddy bear, and he therefore lost that berserk drive.

His hair in X8 lacks its fullness from the past games. It's still just as long, but it's like a strand compared to how fluffy it was before.

Yeah, it looks really strange. He gets some really cool weapons though, so I guess it balances out. In addition to the special powers you get from bosses, Zero gets some neat alternate weapons you can switch between like a fan that puts up a bullet barrier when he stands still, and a spear-like weapon that reaches halfway across the screen (so it's not totally broken, only the blade actually does damage, and the bulk of its length is the handle).

Yeah. The Z-Saber is still the most conventional though until you beat the game and unlock the Sigma Blade (don't remember if there are any requirements for unlocking it other than beating the game). Every character though has their own special things they get for beating the game under certain conditions.
