This former Chessie System EMD SD18 is an extremely rare beast in several ways. First of all, very few (you could probably count them on both hands) locomotives remain in Chessie System paint, and those that do are often rusted, covered in graffiti, or patched over for their new owner. Secondly, only 54 units were built for use in the USA, and Chessie's rode on these ALCo trucks, making this the only unit of its type left. It runs on the Chesapeake & Indiana Railroad between Wellsboro, La Crosse and North Judson, Indiana.

Yes, it runs! Or did at the time of this shot. As of then, it ran occasionally pulling the CKIN's grain trains to the CSX and CN interchange at Wellsboro, IN. I think someone may have bought it for preservation since then.
In either case, the CKIN also uses old EJ&E and DM&IR SD7/9s, pretty cool power in their own right.
