One of my past hobbies (Sadly one I don't get to work on of late) is to play D&D. I enjoy it as a player (Though I find I'm actually bad at designing characters to be super effective. I love personalities and role-playing them out though)
I have a gridded version available if someone wants such I can make it available.
This one here was a fun adventure that took place over a session or two.
The party had been sent to a farm village to investigate a rash of cattle and livestock dissapearing. When they arrived I had provided them with information about what farms had been hit, when they had been hit, and which ones had not been. They were able to figure out which farm was most likely the next target and when from this information.
This was the farm. Basically a group or orcs and worgs was coming and stealing livestock and crops to return to a camp they had been forming slightly inside the kingdoms border.
I had a few planned events that night. The party was allowed to setup rudimentary traps (Like noise bells and such) and posistioned themselves for a steakout of the area. One event that happened during the night was one of the farmer's sons sneaking out for a late night walk... they Almost took him out... Thankfully they got smart. He came out with a wooden sword and shield to try and help protect the cattle.
When the orcs and worgs actually came in, listen checks were total fail on the parties part until the actual noise trap on the gate was sprung. They managed to keep the cattle saved at least and were able to track the path of the escaping orcs and worgs into the forest... eventually back to there camp along with a few locations along the way.
Was a great adventure.
I believe I made this map a few years ago using... oh bother, what was the program I bought...
I believe it was DunnDjinn at the time.
Sorry for some non-food updates. :)

This is actually pretty cool, and looks like a good sized maps. Unfortunately, nowadays maps seem to be relatively small, with ranged characters really having a hard time getting the most out of their specialty. Too many DMs and adventure writers seem to be hesitent to make such distances, as that (theorhetically) means the ranged characters can shoot with impunity. Well, that and it gets harder and harder to find non-floor horizontal surfaces to place large maps on that are sized for the minis.
I'm a big RP player myself, though my 3-9 work schedule makes anything but the weekends virtually impossible. I also love storied characters, even if I'm a bit of a min-maxer through liking well defined specializations in my characters. I'm learning the DM craft, and it is hard stuff. My author's mindset gets in the way it seems, as you can't really write a campaign or adventure like you do a novel; the main protagonists aren't under your direction.

Thank you! It was indeed a BIG map, I printed it out on Four by Four pieces of paper. So it was a hefty map designed with the idea of ranged being involved. I LOVE to use ranged...
Most often on the party itself. ;)
Thank you for liking it.
Yeah, with me having a 5am to 2pm schedule nowadays (And usually different days off every week) it killed my finding time to game unfortunately. I am pondering trying to get something going on-line in time.
I do miss DMing, and playing.
This allowed for ranged to take advantage, BUT, the terrain made long ranged shots difficult.

Exactly! The more distance there is, the more likely there is to be intervening terrain! That's the counterbalance to ranged characters on a large map: firing lanes. Not many people seem to get that.
I'm not sure how good the online gaming table WotC is going to be, but I'll give you a word of warning; online pen and paper RP is a slow process, as an afternoon session could take weeks with the average post rate. The only site I really know of for such online gaming is rpol.net. It's not bad, but finding consistent players that'll stick around for the long haul is very hit or miss. Still, there's no lack of players, and just about any system out there is potentially findable there.

Ah, I'm looking for a live system... basically we have a few tools, on-line dice rollers, a mapping program, and all log into a chat program or some such together.
I may try and get a webcam to actually broadcast the map and move people as they direct too.
Yeah, I've tried forum and e-mail games before and it's just to long for my tastes when it comes to D&D... now I do like forums for general role-playing and character developments.

Well, I know that's what the D&D virtual table is supposed to do, but given the track record of the techs working on the online D&D stuff, once it actually comes out, it'll be buggy as hell for the first month or two. And, well, it'll also require at least the DM to be a D&D Insider, which has a subscription cost (though I think it's worth it for the character builder and the online magazines).
The webcam thing might be awfully tricky. First, you're going to need a quality webcam in order for the picture to be clear enough for what you're doing. Second, you may run into other players encountering lag because of their system. Next, verbally directing movement isn't always the easiest thing to do. Speakers and sound quality among players could also be a problem. I honestly don't think a live webcam is going to work, but it's worth a shot. To be honest, I don't have any better ideas.

Indeed, if I get into 4.0 properly I'll probably sign up for the D&D insider for sure, which will work well enough with the virtual table.
I'm honestly surprised someone out there doesn't have a sort of generic table sort of thing that people can use.
I think what could also work on-line is a sort of "Whiteboard" system where you can upload a map or grid. The DM or Players can use a chat channel (Or voice) and you simply add or move around icons on the grid on the map on the page. The other data is monitored with side programs and the like.
Pretty easy in that respect I think to do, but I haven't really looked into what is out there and low to no cost.

Oh, I'm sure there's some sort of virtual table setup somewhere online, it's just in it's own little niche that you have to know about to find it. The online "whiteboard" is a much sounder idea, though personally I would have no idea either how to find one or set one up. If you have any luck on that front, let me know. I'd be intersted in hearing about it if you can get it to work fluidly.
Ohhh, check this out!
http://www.rptools.net/
It's an open source program, has a lot of tools that can be used for many gaming systems... and the map program looks really neat!
I was able to import one of my maps and the grid on it fit perfect for there default gridding, though you can modify almost everything with enough tweaking.
Has chat feature and ability to create and join servers, and being open source it's available free too.
All done in Java, pretty neat. So far it looks decently powerful and with a little play accomplishes some of the things I want, it'll just be a matter of testing things out a bit.

Been playing with it more and on the self-user level it definitely seems capable of doing what I want. It's decent for map construction as well as general playing. It's got an incorperated fog of war feature as well too.
Easy to make a map from some other program or make one inside. They've got a decent chunk of downloadable content and it's easy to import your own stuff too.
Needs more play on it for sure by me but I think it may work.

Love all the mappy goodness. Might have to borrow some of these if I can ever find the time to get my game here going again.
See, what someone really needs to do is find a source of e-paper that is cheap enough to use as a semi-affordable table-top map. Maybe something like 3' x 3'. Hook that sucker up to a laptop, and use digital markers instead of physical minis. You can scale appropriately so your ranged fighters can use their range, or zoom in so players can see better detail for close-combat and strategic battles. Plus, it's easy to digitally generate a fog of war.
That's what I did for my game here. Given time and proper preparation, I could do digital maps on the fly in a game.
Oh well. Enough wishful thinking. Nice maps!

Feel free! If you want it gridded I've got versions with grids on them designed for one inch squares.
E-paper idea sounds really quite neat! I'd love to see that implemented. I know I would LOVE to have a laptop for DMing someday, it would make things so much easier... I've got these scattered notebooks and papers all over the place with printed and hand written materials, hehe... Much I typed up prepared on the computer, but having on a laptop would be easy.
I remember the old core rules CD for 2.0 that existed that was excellent for this type of thing. I've found a really neat 4.0 dungon tool that again, would be really handy on a laptop for generating and keeping track of all the details.
Thank you though for the comment though! If you find some neat ideas for displaying maps and such please let me know, or get into an on-line bit of gaming.

I actually do my own maps quite often, and found a few map generators, which, while not the best, worked okay. If you want to see a few examples of my maps, check 'em out:
Map of lands the game is set in:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2376849/
Combat map in the middle of combat:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2477220/
Animated overview land flash map I did just to have some fun and be silly:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2566822/
Some temple ruins:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2681327/
Dungeon map complete with fog of war:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2811878/
All of these maps, with the exception of the flash map were made in GIMP, using multiple layers for easy editing. So, I could reuse the same map by simply erasing some of the fog of war layer, flattening and cropping appropriately, and there we go. A new section of the dungeon visible for my players. As I said, it would be awesome to use in tabletop gaming if only I had a proper display for it. Like perhaps a large, high-def TV/flat panel monitor positioned screen up under a glass tabletop. Expensive, but at least do-able with today's technology. I suppose really, this would even be doable with a laptop and a monitor - make the edits, turn the laptop around to face the players, but less impressive that way...

The idea of a tabletop TV like that... yeah...
ACtually... Might not be to bad, I mean they used to have Pacman games you would sit down and look at in a table. Putting a TV display under a table isn't to hard, but some technology and size would be best for figures and such...
That's a great way though to do them that you have. Fun and amusing flash too, huzzah for Indian Jones theme!
GIMP I've never used but heard it's insanely powerful for Linux, aye?
You're a good artist for the maps though, I like them a lot and they lead to the idea of quite an interesting campaign setting too!

GIMP is free and fairly powerful for any system, actually. Open source programs have a way of being put out for multiple operating systems. Just one of the reasons I like Linux so much. As far as I know, GIMP actually has all of the tools that Paintshop Pro has, plus tons of user-scripted stuff as well.
Glad you like my maps. These were actually all made for just one campaign. As a way to get myself to produce more art during a bit of a dry spell, I started up a campaign here on Fur Affinity, the idea that every bit of GM interaction with my players incorporated a sketch or a map or some other bit of art. It makes the game run EXTREMELY slow - at the rate of one round of combat per day, or even per week if I have trouble finding time to do the art, but my players loved it and have been bugging me to start it back up again.
I may do so soon, although currently my priority is to get employed again, a goal I seem to share with many of artists I watch here on FA...
Incidentally, if the idea of running a campaign on FA interests you, pop up one of those maps I linked to and use the navigation buttons to jump to the first post. That'll give you a good idea of how I did it, plus I think it's a fairly fun read...
