This is 7 out of 9 of my Memorial Day Tribute Pictures for the third day; for Memorial Day.
-Here is a view of the Cemetery that I particularly like. This one gives you a much better view of the scale of how large this place is and how many are here. This is just a flat portion, but you can see headstones for a VERY long distance.
-Every white dot you see is a headstone.
-Established during the American Civil War on the grounds of Arlington House, formerly the estate of the family of Confederate general Robert E. Lee's wife Mary Anna (Custis) Lee, the cemetery is situated directly across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
-In an area of 624 acres, veterans and military casualties from each of the U.S. wars are interred in the cemetery, ranging from the American Civil War through to the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
-President Herbert Hoover conducted the first national Memorial Day ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery, on May 30, 1929
-Words cannot aptly describe this place. It is beautifull, yet giveing a haunting memory to those who see. One of the best observations is from President Reagan when he was at Arlington:
"I have no illusions about what little I can add now to the silent testimony of those who gave their lives willingly for their country...for the sight before us is that of a strong and good nation that stands in silence and remembers those who were loved, and who, in return, loved their countrymen enough to die for them."
