Yeah, that's possibly because it doesn't say on the image about how much it is. Although the fact that they didn't have an icon did raise a flag for me - however, I didn't check their profile at the time.
But yeah, never assume an adopt is free. Because the only ways you'd get an adopt is by paying for it, someone buying it for you, or winning it in a raffle.
