Halloween Countdown
-Sinister Slashers-
Freddy Krueger - A Nightmare on Elm Street
Sitting at the top spot among slashers, it's the dream king himself, Freddy Krueger. This is purely a personal bias. Freddy is my favorite slasher - always has been, always will be. I love him at his most terrifying and even at his most undignified. (especially at his most undignified) Before I even gave the slasher genre it's dues, I gravitated to the dream demon of Elm Street and that applies purely to his excessive energy and far more stylized appearance.
You may find this hard to believe, but I've always been an extra person. Shocking, I know, but the more over the top and bombastic a thing is, I will probably like it. I guess it gives me something more to chew on when I feel the killer is a more fully fleshed out character. This is why the cliche silent masked killer didn't apply to me for so long. It was comparatively boring to the gaudy striped sweater and clawed glove. Even his killing ground was more enticing to me. It's one thing to kill people at a camp, but in a dream where anything can happen? Now you have my interest!Nowadays I've since come to appreciate subtlety, but I can't deny my veins. I'll always enjoy something insane and Freddy scratched that itch every time!
Now if you're really sold out for my content you may be aware that I have drawn Freddy before in a countdown and you'd be right! However that was nearly two decades ago in a countdown I'm not overly fond of. I also have a rule now that I won't reuse a character unless I want to give them a winning spot, or at the very least can do something more with them/give them more justice then I previously did. With how this year's countdown is being done, I have the opportunity to do both, so I couldn't pass up giving my favorite slasher the treatment I feel he deserves. Will I regret this later? Maybe, but that just means another year Jason could bring home the bacon! Until then, with Sinister Slashers behind us, it's time to move on to those lovably dark foils - Loathsome Laughs! And who better to usher them in then Freddy who gradually turned into a horror comedy in his own right?
