My Land Yacht - 1973 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight
As some of you may know, I've been looking for an old car that looks, well, different than most of the other old cars on the road that people choose to acquire. This was totally an accidental finding - I was driving to look at an old Valiant which turned out to be a total rustbucket and the engine sounded AWFUL rattly and chattery - and that's allowing for your typical Slant Six noises.
I saw this beaut of a boat on the way to look at the Valiant, but figured the owners wanted far too much for it, in terms of what I had available to shell out. But we stopped back on the way home, "just to see" (this is starting to become a trend...it's how we managed to get our dog, Rascal) and of course, it didn't blow my budget. And of course, it was in really good shape. And of course, it drove nicely...and of course, I ended up driving it home. Haha.
BTW - You might not want to watch me if you only happened to see this pic of the car, unless you don't mind babyfur artwork in the rest of the entire gallery.

Thanks, and awesome icon btw! I want to drive it around SOOO BAAAAD but I gotta wait til tomorrow to formalize the title transfer and get my own tags - previous owner was gracious enough to let me drive it home on his tags, but I'm not going to press my luck there.
AHOY THERE SHITLINER! The shitliner's finally come to port gentlemen!
My neighbor has one, only a decade newer.

Avast ye there matey, methinks that pile o flotsam looks worse than some chumbuckets I've laid me eyes on!
Wow...it's amazing it still *runs*. Exterior wise, mine has some rust on the fender skirts (spats to UK/Aussie types) and there's some rust-through on the right front fender behind the wheel. Interiorwise, the driver's armrest is kinda taped up but the rest of the interior looks almost flawless, the headliner and seats are perfect.
It has current inspection, new tires, new radiator, and the original AC system still works. The radio is AWFUL.

The A/C on there will be near bullet proof. Frigidaire/Harrison A6 compressor, good CFM and low noise. I don't recall if GM had switched to the Orifice Tube design from the expansion valve type yet in 1973.
Ugh, GM AM radios of that era. The speaker is probably so sun damaged I would not be surprized if the voice coil was no longer connected to a 'complete' speaker cone.

Yeah, the fan isn't working on high, supposedly there's a high speed fan relay and a fuse that can be prone to blowing, I havent investigated there...and the blower also shuts off completely when I put it in "AIR COND" mode but it works and blows cold on "BI-LEVEL". May be related to the fuse or relay.
The radio is actually AM/FM, don't recall if it's stereo but there's at least one speaker in front and one in back.

I love a nice landyatch, and luckily, Oldsmobile didnt go into the trap of making it sporty.. even thought they created the Musclecar, with the Oldsmobile Rocket.. XD
This is a propper oldschool luxurycar ;)
but i can immagine its a hard car to park, and the wheel must be turned a million times from lock to lock ;)
lucky, nevertheless ;)

Yeah, backing it out of my yard for the first time is going to be a challenge, especially with the idiot that parks out in front of his garage in the alley, right behind us. Sheesh.
As for the engines, yes! 455 cid 4 barrel, 340HP stock. Sounds nice even with a single. Vroooom!

Thanks! there's some rust on the skirts (they're removable and there's a source I found for used replacements for around $180, if I post on a forum I might get 'em cheaper...and then the one hole. It's been garage kept from new until about three years ago when the then 92 year old owner had to give it up. Not sure what the rest of it looks like under there, I plan to take it by our usual shop and have them give it a good looking-over, it didn't get much road time in the past few years and it looks like there's a slight leak where the transmission pan is.
Ah yeah! The lod car's tech is awesome

I've been noticing a lot of people driving old cars. Interesting yet fascinating. If I could, I would drive an old one myself from 30's to 60's but maybe refurbished or set up do it's efficient like today's cars.
Otherwise, get me a VW Beatle I guess. Or a "Mini Cooper". No real need for a hauling truck or mini van imo.

I think I'd go for something from the 20s or 30s, or 60s to maybe early 80s if I had it over again. An old Beetle would be great. I ended up selling Winnie because was just too much work to keep up, rust was settling in and i don't know a thing about bodywork. And I was never that into 40s and 50s cars for the most part.
Ive seen some real beauties on the Wheeler Dealers episodes, though most of theirs are European. An old Citroen 2CV or DS would be lovely, I knew someone growing up that had a Triumph Stag in the US and that was a fun car too.
I'd love another Duster from the 70s but those are crazy money now unless theyre totally rotten.
Then again, I have no place to store a project car (and I can't work on my car in the parking lot of the condo development) and one really does need a garage to work on them anyway.

Ooh...that's good too. I just know models more from the 50's and on and I have thing for the WW2 era culture or design.
Like yesterday, while out I saw what I could only describe as a "Slot car" or like old-timey red race car, (long hood, two-seater, very low and then but definitely could drive fast I'll bet, for its time)
Or maybe a few days ago, when at a Wal-Mart, I saw what I could describe as like a "Cruella De Vil" car but shorter in length but still black-and-white. *whistles*
I think a car that would be nice to own would simply be the car I sometimes call the Thunderbird or as most people, especially of the stage, might know it...
"Greased Lightning" (I can show you a picture of the black-and-white car on Skype btw, via my phone. )
