Halloween Countdown
-Sinister Slashers-
no. 3: Michael Myers - Halloween
Much like with Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween was a series that took me until recently to come around on; even more so really, as I feel Texas Chainsaw Massacre's over-the-top nature drew me to it little by little. Halloween's calmer approach to horror just wasn't something I was up for when I was young and stupid. Now I'm old and stupid, but I can appreciate the series and more importantly, the character of Michael for what he is. An entity, a shape, something inhuman - hence my attempt at something more experimental this time around. Not sure I entirely puled it off, but hey I did it!
While I gave Gremlins top billing for Tiny Terrors on essentially creating their genre, I'm gonna be a bit of a hypocrite here and not do the same for Michael. This is mostly out of personal bias. Michael Myers may have created the slasher genre, but I feel others perfected it, at least for my own personal taste. Also, while I've come around to the Halloween series, I can't really say I'm a huge fan of most of them passed the first two. (I do find Halloween III hilarious but for purely ironic reasons) While this does effect my score for Michael, it doesn't lessen how I feel about the character. I feel the first two films are masterpieces in subtle horror and both Nick Castle and Dick Warlock play Myers wonderfully. He deserves to be recognized as the OG slasher... I just like a few more then him!
