"Leave 'Em Out, For The Critters!"
Myself and
RViking have been playing and enjoying a lot of Wild Bastards (Spiritual successor to Void Bastards, one of my all time favorite games) and well, a good chunk of that enjoyment comes from this guy, known as Hopalong. Between his sultry rancher's voice, flowing "snakelocks," endearing face, not to mention his incredibly useful abilities in the game itself, ol' Hop here embodies all of the biblical charm we were warned about when it comes to our serpentine friends.
Mr. Reindeer T. Viking was lamenting the lack of fan art for this guy, perhaps speaking to the game's underrated nature in general, so between last night and this morning I slapped this together as a kind of surprise. Despite my concerns, I was in fact able to draw a cowboy hat on a snake man.
Here's a reference for his in-game appearance, at this link which may or may not work: https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_fulls.....ktwmnfwp4@jpeg
And definitely check out the game, it fucking rules, and also there's a horse guy in there, if you're into that: https://store.steampowered.com/app/.....Wild_Bastards/

Well shit, you know what? This DOES kind of do something for me. You did an absolutely amazing job adapting his in-game model to your style by retaining the large, distinct, separated plating that make up his face and you even added more texture and detail to his hair by giving them more of an angled edge at the start of each segment. You added detail to his eyes too by making his pupils more of a diffuse white glow among the gold, and it looks really, REALLY good. I'm noticing you also gave him a lithe, wiry physique I've seen before in people who've gained their strength by working hard outside doing a lot of different strenuous physical tasks. Wonderful attention to detail and respect for this character. You're tempting me to actually watch you play this.
Thanks, I actually meant for him to be a bit more lithe than this but, Trevor insists to me that he's perfect and I shouldn't touch him. Now, trying to keep you amused while I played through this would be too much pressure quite frankly but maybe it's something that boy of yours would be interested in tackling some time, if you're more content to spectate than play. Don't know that the game's art style is actually your thing but the characters/voice work might do more than zero for you.
"YEE HAW! LET'S GET 'EM, BOYS!"
It's great to see fanart for one of my two favorite characters in an absolutely incredible game. (My other favorite is Casino, if you're wondering.)
Wild Bastards is such an awesome game. The story mode ended in a disappointing way, but the challenges and proc-gen modes more than make up for it.

Casino's been in the doghouse with me since I first started the game to be honest, too many nasty misses with his shotgun. Personality wise my favorites are Hopalong, Sarge, and Smoky but in terms of the ones I most trust to take into showdowns, that'd be more like Preach, Billy, and, if he's got decent mods, Sarge. I often used Hop for his extra steps but he can be insanely useful in showdowns in the right circumstances.
I do think Wild Bastards was very underrated though in some ways it felt unfinished. The two overworld maps being almost a board game within the main game was very clever but the actual showdown arenas felt disappointingly empty sometimes, with hints that maybe there were bigger ideas planned but scrapped? Although I love them both, the game's predecessor, Void Bastards, is the superior game, IMO, just tighter use of its mechanics and more varied gameplay in combat. But Wild Bastards has the superior characters/story, which sounds like they were setting up for a sequel which I'm...not sure is coming.

Yeah, Casino definitely gets punished hard when things don't go according to plan. It gets rough and unforgiving when things go wrong for him. But maybe that's why I enjoy his playstyle. Extremely high risk and high reward. I definitely think he's a lot more fun and less punishing than Judge.
I definitely think Void Bastards had some added polish here and there that Wild Bastards lacked. And ironically, I think Wild Bastards's story ended even more disappointingly than Void Bastards's; which was an ending that was specifically trying to be anticlimactic. I'm definitely with the consensus that people were just way, way, WAY too quick to side with Spike and turn on Casino and Rosa in order to make the plot happen. And then instead of apologizing or reaching an accord, it ends with them being threatened again. Sarge went from "Do you have any evidence?" and "Even if they did it, it was a wise tactical decision," straight to "I should just kill you myself" at the drop of the hat.
I also agree that some of the mechanics needed more time to cook. I actually liked the Pals/Feuding mechanic in principle, but it really just came down to a dice roll for two people to lower their friendship rating when they are paired together. I think it would have been cooler if them doing well as a pair in a lot of fights would make them pals, while taking a lot of damage and/or injuries would give them a significantly higher chance to feud.
And also, I really feel like they should have made Chaste more of a Nemesis style enemy instead of just an insta-kill. Like... if the team runs into him, they have to do an extremely hard encounter; and even if they win, it just holds him off until the next turn, and you get no infamy. Something more interactive.
But even so, I still love the game. I love the challenges and I love the proc-gen playthroughs. It's just a good time.
In terms of personality, my favorites are probably Casino, Rawhide, Hopalong, and Spike... EXCEPT for during the main story.

Wild Bastards had big shoes to fill for me personally because Void Bastards is one of my all time favorite games, enough that I went through the hell of a Hard Bastards Iron Man run and subsequent Foon run. And to WB's credit, while I wasn't so sure on Wild Bastards at first, despite its flaws, if you play long enough you start to 'get it,' and understand what they're going for. There's just a few things I would change to really put it over the top. Like you said, having things like feuding be based on performance instead of just Smoky randomly deciding to once again have a meltdown over a beans comment said slightly the wrong way (not that this didn't amuse me) would have felt a lot deeper. I also would have loved more exploration or things to collect in the arenas instead of just straight combat. But also, speaking of combat, if you're going for a shoot-out style, I think having some tactics like leaning out from cover and other maneuvers like that would have gone a long way, especially for a game that's so dependent on cover and strategy to survive.
The buddy I did this drawing for is a big, big fan of found-family stories, ragtag groups of people bonding over time, and so he got super pissed at the likes of Roswell and Spike doing all they could to break up the band. Roswell didn't bother me as much but I'm not into the stereotypical 'punk' thing that Spike has going. Funny thing about how much I like Hopalong is that I'm not really a snake guy. I mean snakes themselves are fine, cute even, but I'm not very into snakes like, within this fandom. But I dunno, Hopalong just has -it- and -it- might be that silky smooth speaking voice of his. And I like that he's just so chill. I mean I love using Preach in combat but when she gets on it about how Hopalong is wicked according to the Bible I'm like, heal the snake and shut up, bitch.
I've heard that Chaste is unkillable though I don't know much about it because I've actually never fought a Prince. I'm so meticulous with my overworld management that I've never had to do it yet. I feel like I should because you get good infamy for it and it sounds like they're not so tough after a while, based on what friends tell me but I also feel like I should maintain this streak of Princelessness, see how far I can take it. But yeah, honestly? I'm down for a story where it's a bunch of aliens and bots hunted down, at least on the surface, due to intergalactic racism, but it's a shame you don't get to cap the motherfucker who caused it by the end. Again, seems like they were maybe setting up for a sequel but based on what appears to be a so-so reception, I don't know if one's coming. But here's hoping, as much as I'd love a Void Bastards sequel, I'd be more than happy to continue the ride with Hop and the gang.
