Like everyone else, I'm pro-Luna, but that doesn't mean I can't be pro-Celestia too. I think we're being a little hard on her for the whole thing about moon banishment. I guess if sending my possessed sister to her room didn't work, the moon would be my next best bet.

Point 1: She embodies all SIX of the Elements.
Point 2: Laughter IS one of those Elements.
When I think of "troll" I think of cruelty (and also a lack of intelligence, but that isn't actually required). If you want to say that non-cruel pranking qualifies as "troll" then I suppose she is.

That's kind of what I thought too. I figure the elements of harmony let you weaponize friendship, and since Celestia was using them on her own, they were a lot weaker, so she could only banish Nightmare Moon. When Twilight and her friends used them, since there were 6 of them, the Elements were a lot stronger and could remove Nightmare Moon without hurting Luna. Since their friendship has gotten stronger (during the Eternal Night incident, they'd only recently met), they'd probably be even stronger now if they are ever used again.
I also think Celestia know about this and was when the time started to get near to NM's release, started manipulating events to get things together, a bit beyond just what hinting that Twilight needed friends and sending her to Ponyville. She strikes me as kind of being the Lord Vetinari of Equestria.

I don't see why anyone would complain about the moon thing. Luna's actual physical form may be tiny and adorable, but Celestia's probably is too. Luna is MORE POWERFUL than her sister. The legend's pretty clear about that, and she throws magic around like a drunken sailor in the pilot. Whether or not she's your sister or adorable or is motivated by 'nobody loves me' issues, when she won't listen to reason and tries to destroy the world, what choice do you have?
But she is being much nicer to 'Holy crap our bloodline finally produced another goddess' Twilight.

There's a short cartoon on ponychan positing that when Celestia was "sent away" for part of the episode, she was sent to the sun. :) I laughed.
In fact, here's the link, for as long as that lasts:

Ah, overthinking cartoons... hours of entertainment.

I subscribe to the theory that the Elements of Harmony were not as powerful when Celestia tried to use them by herself when her best buddy turned against her, so the best she could do was say "to the moon with you!" It took six friends to realize the true power and free Luna of her dark form.
It only costs me 12 dollars a month, payable to Celestia Publications.

TOO MOVE THE STORY ALONG! DUN DUN DUN!
Its not the moon banishment that got me, it was allowing her sister to fade from pony history all the while taking over both duties and then putting on face as if nothing were any different. There could have been OTHER options then letting her just disappear like that. She could have said that maybe Luna had disappeared or was taken away by other forces or SOMETHING. The fact that ponies forgot about her kinda makes the fact that Luna hated being ignored all the more ironic...only this time, it wasn't because the ponies not acknowledging her, it was because someone else ALLOWED it to happen.

I think the moon sealing thing was caused by a shortfall in Celestia's power. She wasn't strong enough to purify Luna with the elements of harmony so she had to settle for sealing her away until someone could come up with the power to do it right, that was Twilight and her friends...in fact that could be the very reason Celestia chose to take on a student in the first place.
(Necrocomment, ahoy!)
There's also the point that the Sun is (much!) bigger than the Moon, at least here in reality; It doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to presume that's true for Equestria as well. The sisters' size difference could be seen to reflect that of the Sun and Moon, although to a (much!) lesser extent.
No idea if that's the intended implication, but it seems to fit :P

I had a response but it went to the wrong user. :P
My thoughts are this; Celestia, like Luna, is UNDERDEVELOPED as a character. Her only functions so far seem to be to smile and look pretty, repeat the lesson of the episode and have people bow down to her. Compared to the rest of the cast who have actually personalities, backstories and actual screen time, Celestia just isn't that intresting. As far as the legened went, it was pretty stock to begin with becaxuse we've heard it before;
Dark becomes evil (because all things dark HAVE to be evil) while lights defeats it. Even though there was a source to Luna turning evil apparently, what makes everything so sour to some is the fact that Celestia LET her sister fade into a memroy rather than trying to do something to help her. Even if she could not remove the source, the least she could have done was keep the GOOD memory of her sister alive or remind ponies that once ago, Luna was good but felt unloved because everyone praised Celestia instead. To sit for 1,000 years and let Luna become a fable? Yeah, that's a DICK MOVE and one that didn't make Celestia seem that powerful to a lot of people, me included.
I know I am going to catch flack for this, but there are times when Celestia seems to be an in-verse Mary-Sue...but just by small margins. Even though she is ruler (when she was once CO-RULER) and everyone loves her, there really is no signs of WHY we should love her other than she's pretty, light, and gave HERSELF the title of princess. Adding in the other things she LET happened doesn't really make her seem crafty or smart; it just felt cheap. Even though the elements going to the other ponies were cool, I wish there would have been more of a conflict between Celestia and Nightmare Moon as if to reflect what happened years ago. Hell, they could have shown Celestia joining with the others with the elements and giving NMM the KO that needed to bring Luna back. THAT would have been kick-ass to see but...we just got what we got...and even now, it doesn't change my mind of how underutilized she was and has been.
I just hope in season 2 we see more interaction between the sisters as well as personalities. I also hope that Luna gets a chance to 'grow up' and show that Celestia doesn't have to be the only pony in the show with a flashy design. If they're really trying to get the message that the two sisters were 'equal' in their ruling, I don't see how giving Luna a more grown-up look would hurt this. Again, making Celestia the only pony to be this powerful, especially with her lack of characterization or action, makes her BORING, not cool. :P

Yeah, the whole Princess title kinda implies that there's someone higher up.. but then again, we can at least think of it along the lines of "we call her Princess 'cause if we called her Queen it'd sound old", or something like that. The whole trope about a woman's age and stuff.. :3
Then again, it DOES also leave open the possibility of Celestia and Luna's parents showing up later, whom would be the King and Queen, as some fanon has imagined and some fanart has depicted.. but then other theories has them no longer being alive too.. so.. I don't really know where I'm going with all of this! The fact that they actually created a mythology and backstory to go with My Little Pony is amazing, period.

People seem to definitely forget that Celestia is strong, that Celestia is a very rare combination of Unicorn and Pegasus, and that she, like Luna, seems to have great longevity, but even with all that, she is NOT a God. She, like anyone else, can be prone to making the wrong decision at times, especially with how young the two supposedly were when the whole thing happened.
People say she has no character development in the story, but personally, I think the fact that she's able to arrange things so her sister can be freed of Nightmare Moon proves she has grown up since the day ONE THOUSAND YEARS ago she let Luna's memory fade.
Sorry. Didn't mean to start ranting, but I stand by what I say.

You make some good points, and I don't wanna turn this into a flamewar, but I disagree about the assertion of Celestia and Luna's divinity. They are at the absolute, very least, the most powerful demigods in all of fiction, if not full fledged goddess-level already. Manipulation of a planet or even just it's moon would require enormous amounts of energy, whether scientific or magical, and we've actually seen them show off their power a few times (I can cite exact moments if needed), so it isn't just stories spread by ponykind. That kind of power is far beyond that of the vast majority of gods in fiction, even in high fantasy, even if the scope that we're aware of is limited.
As for making mistakes, well, unless you're talking about one particular deity's faith IRL (which I will NOT be going into.. religion on the Internet? No sir!), gods have flaws. The Greek and Norse pantheons alone are filled with books' worth of examples, and those are just the most well known. So yeah, you're right, she can mess things up and has learned a LOT in the interim centuries, but that doesn't make either of them NOT a goddess!
I honestly think the only reason the show doesn't come outright and say it is 'cause Hasbro doesn't want to imply that their fictional creation is the "real" deity of, well, anything but ponies in their setting. The targeted demographic believes in the tooth fairy and Santa Claus; confusing them with religion would not be in their best interests.

Point taken. And you're right, that could be the case. It's just that I, Personally, believe our lives aren't determined by our successes, but rather how we push past our failures. Celestia failed at something and later did her best to rectify it. That's my viewpoint. But yeah, you're right.
No worries, I'm a high-fantasy geek and have done more then a bit of research into background lore for various series (and love the books that specifically cover the "higher powers" in such settings), so it's a "thing" for me. You're certainly entitled to your own opinions, and I appreciate the polite reply! :)
late response but...
I feel sorry for Luna; being trapped with these guys for 1,000 years?
