In the 22nd century, New Aztlán, a revival of the Aztec Empire, has come to dominate much of what used to be Mexico. Nōchtli was a leading general for the army of Tetzcoco, one of its leading member city-states, and oversaw the small-scale, highly-ritualized warfare that would take place between Tetzcoco and its rivals. His grasp of water magic skills helped him out in this regard. Although he had a wife and four kids, Nōchtli fell in love with a younger soldier in the Tetzcocoan army. Eventually caught, he was sentenced to death, but the tlatoani of Tetzcoco, a friend, quietly let him escape and leave Tetzcoco for good. He survived an arduous journey by foot to Texas.
He has impressive water-conjuring powers, although the cultivated, careful magic used in New Aztlanian ceremonial warfare doesn't translate well to the bombastic, all-out magic of North American recreational arena fighting. Despite the learning curve, he quickly adapts and becomes a versatile fighter. Nōchtli travels with the Fighting Rainbows, a group of mostly gay arena fighters, but insists that he is not gay himself. Nōchtli (Nahuatl for "prickly pear fruit") is not his real name; it is a nickname he uses in Texas. Although Nahuatl is his main language, he learned English as a foreign language from a young age due to his high social status.
His jewelry and clothing were researched beforehand, but I can't guarantee it's 100% accurate to Mexica style. My explanation for this would be that New Aztlán had access to a similar body of information as me when it re-established Mexica culture and statecraft.
