Oh man, yeah! I feel ya there. I always basecoated black and it'd take easily three or four coats for any kinda lighter colors, and it's hard to do that while also not losing detail or messing up anything else..

It looks great, though. :) That sorta sharp contrast always stands out so damn nice at such a scale, and the effort really pays off.

I really like how the dark basecoat kinda gives you a 'default' bit of depth in a lot of cracks and crevices, so you can focus on bringing out the raised parts, rather than having to go back in and add the depth in later. But it's a tradeoff I guess. :)

For sure. The different techniques all have their place. I use a wet pallet with acrylics and build up layers of lighter colors out of the shadows. Sometimes starting with a middle color and building up highlights and down into shadows.

Again, I hate to repeat myself, but the effort and detail really shows! I'm kinda novice in terms of art/color theory/all that stuff and tend to rely a bit heavily on stuff like dry brushing to help pull out detail, and some super-close-not-not-quite-the-same-colors used as highlights without proper blending, just never had a lot of luck with consistency on some good blending. :D
