Info: Toshiko comes from a race of enigmatic and extraordinarily powerful magical beings. Despite their power, they are known even more for their intelligence. That intelligence was focused more on trade and games. They would constantly test themselves against each other, often indecisively. If they had kept their attention focused on themselves, they may not have ever reached the heights they did. However, others entered their games in search of fortune and favors from magical beings.
Other races found themselves utterly unprepared for the consequences of participating in the games of Toshiko’s people. Her people played for keeps, and losing so decisively in their games came with consequences. With magic backing up those consequences, they could do little about it. If they were lucky, they might find themselves stripped of their own fortunes and servants of the nine-tailed foxes.
While this was worrying for other races, this was quite the event for the nine-tailed foxes, one which changed their civilization forever. They had grown so used to challenging each other that they had no idea they were so advanced compared to other races. Eventually, they started seeking out other beings to challenge, always winning their games and trade deals, causing the nine-tailed foxes to accumulate more wealth and power.
As their powers grew, they went from challenging individuals to entire civilizations. Even the combined abilities of entire races proved to be no match for the nine-tails. And they took everything from those civilizations. In the present, even what the nine-tailed foxes consider a poor member of their race may have as many as a million other civilizations in their servitude.
At one point, they started to grow their bodies as a reflection of their wealth and power. They would usually only show their true size to each other while they made themselves look smaller to other races. This was to show off their success to each other while making other races have to work to figure out how powerful and successful they really were.
Eventually, the nine-tails did grow so powerful that other races tried to stop dealing with them. That was a situation that the nine-tails found intolerable. Participation in their games stopped being optional. If they entered your presence, you had to play, or else. Still, if someone could win against them, an extremely rare occurrence, they could find themselves gifted with more power than they could possibly imagine.
The nine-tails decided to formalize the rules of their games, primarily to help make things more fun from their point of view. This led to them joining other races that rivaled them in power from different universes to create the Planetary Acquisitions Corporation. They were fairly hands-off with it as long as it allowed them to do what they wanted.
This led to nine-tails gaining ever more control over the multiverse. It also led to most races trying to stay beneath the notice of the nine-tails. Still, some people were willing to go up against the nine-tails for various reasons. Maybe they let their greed override their common sense, or perhaps they were just that arrogant. That was how a young Tohsiko, not even 30 years old, found herself in a competition with a group of gods. If they won, they would get all the power Toshiko had. Even though she only had one tail and had barely started out in life, her power was still worth it to these gods.
Unfortunately for them, it turned out that Toshiko was exceptionally talented, even for a nine-tailed fox. The end result of her game with the gods was that she had one of them for breakfast while the others were forced into servitude. Toshiko would give them chances to win their freedom on her birthday every time she got a new tail. This was why Toshiko had a god as a birthday treat until she had a full set of tails and no gods remained.
This feat would be one of many Toshiko was known for. She even managed to win the loyalty of a few other members of her race. Billions of races would also find themselves as her servants. And those were just the ones she found interesting enough to keep. While Toshiko enjoyed winning, she enjoyed a challenge even more. If she defeated someone so thoroughly that she did not see any potential in them, she would find other ways to get entertainment out of them that did not usually include their continued existence. Everyone else would at least be allowed to become her servants so they could hopefully learn from her and become a better challenge in the future.
Toshiko went for centuries without losing in anything, until more recently in time. She had not cared much about the Planetary Acquisitions Corporation her people had created so long ago. Its leadership had not impressed her much until an ambitious young vole managed to take control of it. She had heard tales of his intelligence and went out of her way to challenge him to a game. She was stunned when she lost for the first time, but it was not a bad experience for her. Over time, she would challenge him again and again, sometimes losing and sometimes winning. It was like she had found a beloved partner. This prompted her to join the board of the corporation, where she has helped it achieve new heights.
