This was an assignment from a few months ago. A 'master copy' assignment, we could literally choose any artist and art style we wanted. I went for James Gurney, because I've been practicing oils. I agonized ad nauseum about what painting to choose but eventually just had to pick one cuz I was running out of time!
This particular painting is from "Dinotopia: The World Beneath".
We had to mimic the artist's medium/technique as well, and while I had Gurney's book that listed the surface, prep, media, etc... well, technique is just damn hard.
THAT SAID, here is my inelegant copy of a James Gurney painting.
15x18", oil with a light acrylic underpainting on illustration board over a matte-medium-sealed pencil drawing.
ORIGINAL (thanks to

You have good taste. :)
I'm comparing it to my copy as I write this, and the differences are only discernable enough to prove it's an honest-to-goodness master copy. That looks like excellent practice.
And props to you for full-out emulating Mr. Gurney's oil technique! (He makes it look so easy.)

James Gurney is one of my favorite artists evarrrrr (which is why I'm super-jealous you got to meet him, haha!). <3 His cityscapes make me want to cut myself, even moreso when I found out much of that stuff was painted with a model he had built.
You did an awesome job with this! :'D Oil copies are hard to do, and I cannot imagine how long it took you to mix the colors to match the original.
That was my least favorite part of painting class, anyways. Lol~
Just curious... how did sealing the pencil with matte medium work out? I've never tried it, but I figure it might be better than pencil smearing all over the place.

Thank you! Yeah, the colors were a battle even beyond the drawing, not to mention the actual painting and brushstrokes. AUUGH.
But yes, sealing a pencil drawing was a revelation. It may smudge very slightly when you apply the wet medium, but if you dab/brush lightly instead of pressing hard and dragging the brush, it's totally good to go. It really allows more versatility with rubbing away the paint, too, which is like... YES
