This is 2 out of 3 of my Memorial Day Tribute Pictures.
One thing most people never heard is that guards at the Tomb were able to eyewitness the plane crashing into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 from the hill this sits on. The Guards are there during snow, sleat, hail, you name it.
-The Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns occurs at Arlington National Cemetary in Washington, D.C. every day.
-This event of changeing the guards out has been happening 24/7, 365 days of the year since 1937.
-The Tomb of the Unknowns contains the remains of three unknown soldiers. One from WWI (under the big mausoleum), one from WWII (far right), one from the Korean War (far left), and there was also a fourth one from Vietnam (middle), but later was identified and exhumed. The marble slab where he was is still there as a tribute to all those in the war.
-It is considered one of the highest honors to serve as a ceremonial guard. Fewer than 20% of all volunteers are accepted for training and of those only a fraction pass training to become full-fledged Tomb Guards. The sentinels do not wear rank insignia on their uniforms so that they do not outrank the Unknowns, whatever their rank may have been.
-The changing of the guard is done in the Summer, every half hour; during the Winter every hour. After cemetary hours when it closes, guards are changed every 2 hours until reopening.
-The guards have unloaded rifle that always have a bayonet equiped, and ammo to use the rifles if the need arises.
-Witnessing This event occuring is something to behold. If your ever in the area, please, please go watch this, and behold the somber beauty of the cemetary.
